In a global cataclysm, "The Sudden Departure," 140 million people disappeared without a trace. Three years later, residents of Mapleton, N.Y., try to maintain equilibrium when the notion of "normal" no longer applies. Intense grief has divided families and turned faith to cynicism, paranoia and madness, leading some of the traumatized to join the Guilty Remnant, a cultlike group. Kevin Garvey, a beleaguered police chief, must keep peace between townspeople and the cult, a task made tougher with concern about his kids. His daughter alternates between apathy and rebellion, and his wayward son befriends a charismatic prophet. "The Leftovers" is based on the best-seller by Tom Perrotta, who is one of the series' executive producers.

The third and final season is one for the ages, capping off an utterly unique time-tripping story about the end of the world. Go to Full Review

Nora's story is recognizable to anyone who's suffered trauma. It reflects a certain fantasy, even. Go to Full Review

As the show broadened geographically it did the same tonally, newly injected with a kind of mordant humor as its characters began to give in to rather than resist its grand, apocalyptic currents. Go to Full Review

Each episode is a reawakening, a daring reorientation of characters or setting, and they're all building towards something world-changing. Go to Full Review

The show ultimately connects the Departure to the experience of loss and grief - religion does not so much explain the mysteries of life as provide a framework for living within them. Go to Full Review

Chris B Jul 20 I can't comment on The Leftovers without first addressing the elephant in the room...LOST. I have never been as mesmerized and addicted to a show as I was LOST, I loved it. And each episode of LOST added to the incredibly perplexing mysteries of the island, it's past, it's story. I continued to watch, waiting for the ultimate resolution and explanation of the hundreds of unanswered mysteries that were fed to us by the powers that be. In the end, they NEVER explained anything really. I've never been so angry and let down by a TV show. I LOVED it and it betrayed me. Shame on you. At that time, I saw the name JJ Abrams and vowed that I would never again watch anything by him, and I haven't. What I failed to do though was add Damon Lindelof to that list. My fault, but guess what? He did it to me again. I loved The Leftovers, and yet it was essentially an exact repeat of LOST. It entices you, with wild questions and then leaves you hanging with nary an explanation later. The Leftovers made me feel confused much of the time. And then the dream sequences made that confusion even more convoluted. Where does reality end and fantasy begin? But I stuck with it, only to find that the answers to the questions proposed would never come. It's an amazing show, but it sucked. I don't know how else to explain it except to say that next time I see the name Lindelof, I will not let him do that to me a third time. Seriously. See more Derek R 02/13/2025 Was this good? yes. Should you watch it? absolutely. Was it weird and strange and a bit odd? yup. I love these uniquely made shows that really let's you interpret things the way you want. I think everyone should check it out See more Zach B 01/17/2025 A beautiful ending. I highly recommend. The actors make you feel their emotions with them. Elite performances throughout the cast. See more Marguerite G 01/01/2025 Sorry I don’t have the words being it’s new years eve, watching after a -whenever it first came out haitus, and a rare HBO membership. Was appalled at season one, season two…is what I recall from past, season three is like an excellent symphony, theres is a ton of mystery and clarity at the same time. The acting is 6 stars. There are few shows that really captivate me, Twin Peaks, Leftovers, Masters of Sex, etc-dreamy, real, relentless mystery, very strong people. See more Mary G 12/27/2024 I enjoyed almost every episode of the three seasons except the series finale. This episode focuses on the two main characters, Kevin and Nora, recounting what happened to them individually after they parted. This episode would have had a much greater impact if there were a few 'flashback' scenes while Nora was recounting her journey to rejoin her children. A quick few seconds depicting Nora crossing over to the same parking lot in the other reality, on the boat from Australia to the US, seeing her family for the first time and her look of disappointment when she realized they had moved on without her, requesting the creator build a return machine so she could return home, etc. would've greatly enriched her story. And on Kevin's side a quick few seconds of Kevin's disappointment at Nora not showing up for Matt's funeral etc. would've greatly enriched his story. Other than the final episode, which we found to be a let-down due to its tedious storytelling, this was a very entertaining series, particularly due to the good actors, especially Christopher Eccleston, bringing their characters to life. See more Phillip W @phillybob 10/18/2024 It seems that aimless writing doesn't make for great tv adaptations. Sadly, The Leftovers is no more appetizing than that 3 day old Caesar salad in your fridge. See more Read all reviews
