In a global cataclysm, "The Sudden Departure," 140 million people disappeared without a trace. Three years later, residents of Mapleton, N.Y., try to maintain equilibrium when the notion of "normal" no longer applies. Intense grief has divided families and turned faith to cynicism, paranoia and madness, leading some of the traumatized to join the Guilty Remnant, a cultlike group. Kevin Garvey, a beleaguered police chief, must keep peace between townspeople and the cult, a task made tougher with concern about his kids. His daughter alternates between apathy and rebellion, and his wayward son befriends a charismatic prophet. "The Leftovers" is based on the best-seller by Tom Perrotta, who is one of the series' executive producers.

As the show broadened geographically it did the same tonally, newly injected with a kind of mordant humor as its characters began to give in to rather than resist its grand, apocalyptic currents. Go to Full Review

The show ultimately connects the Departure to the experience of loss and grief - religion does not so much explain the mysteries of life as provide a framework for living within them. Go to Full Review

KM K @RT53883097 5 days ago just finished the entire 3 seasons. season 1 was a masterpiece. season 2 was alright. season 3 was meh. As I was watching s2 and 3, I kept thinking this is such a waste of my time. it's how far it had fallen from the quality of s1. I had to treat s2 and s3 as a fantasy entertainment. Then, it was okay. But just because s1 was so incredible, at the level of one of the best seasons in tv history, s2 and s3 seemed so trite. as one of the commenters below said, if I had finished this show at s1, I would probably have added it to my GOAT list. How it fell off is akin to how Westworld fell off after an incredible season 1. funny thing is, season 1 ends so well that there is really no need for sequel. should've just ended with the novel and not let lindelof make it own's fantasy fetish See more Matthew Z @RT48816858 Aug 18, 2026 I watched it during its episodic release, and while I’ve found a handful of awesome shows like it, none have quite reached its level for me. The greatest series of all time. See more Jazzmin H @jazzminbree Apr 28, 2026 I kind of drifted this season. Strange they moved it all the way to Australia. Some of the reasons feels too outlandish, but I suppose the world they built is a little bit outlandish. I'd truly like to dive deep in the creators intentions of this show which may explain some of the things that go on in the show. Nonetheless, it was still well acted and enjoyed the ending of the show. It was nicely wrapped up without feeling like I needed more. See more Chris B @RT04738031 Jul 20, 2025 I can't comment on The Leftovers without first addressing the elephant in the room...LOST. I have never been as mesmerized and addicted to a show as I was LOST, I loved it. And each episode of LOST added to the incredibly perplexing mysteries of the island, it's past, it's story. I continued to watch, waiting for the ultimate resolution and explanation of the hundreds of unanswered mysteries that were fed to us by the powers that be. In the end, they NEVER explained anything really. I've never been so angry and let down by a TV show. I LOVED it and it betrayed me. Shame on you. At that time, I saw the name JJ Abrams and vowed that I would never again watch anything by him, and I haven't. What I failed to do though was add Damon Lindelof to that list. My fault, but guess what? He did it to me again. I loved The Leftovers, and yet it was essentially an exact repeat of LOST. It entices you, with wild questions and then leaves you hanging with nary an explanation later. The Leftovers made me feel confused much of the time. And then the dream sequences made that confusion even more convoluted. Where does reality end and fantasy begin? But I stuck with it, only to find that the answers to the questions proposed would never come. It's an amazing show, but it sucked. I don't know how else to explain it except to say that next time I see the name Lindelof, I will not let him do that to me a third time. Seriously. See more Derek R @RT65652039 Feb 13, 2025 Was this good? yes. Should you watch it? absolutely. Was it weird and strange and a bit odd? yup. I love these uniquely made shows that really let's you interpret things the way you want. I think everyone should check it out See more Zach B @RT34500026 Jan 17, 2025 A beautiful ending. I highly recommend. The actors make you feel their emotions with them. Elite performances throughout the cast. See more Read all reviews
