There are a few flaws in the six episodes Amazon made available for review, but none of them undermines the depth and power of Dick's premise.

There might be almost too much information involved; there are certain scenes you'll want to rewatch or freeze-frame through, just to get all the details. But damn, do we want to see more of it.

The premise is gangbusters, but the execution is only so-so; it feels drawn out and muted. Still, I would willingly watch another one.

The Man in the High Castle is one of the most intriguing pilots in recent memory, an unsettling dystopia that is so fascinating and well-constructed, it overshadows any attempt at the pilot to deepen its characters.

Ambitious and brainy, The Man in the High Castle is unlike anything else on television, and a good argument in favor of the Amazon way of doing things.

The best new show of the fall season (and there is no close second) is not on a broadcast network... The honor belongs to... Amazon and its luminous series version of The Man in the High Castle.

Former X-Files producer Frank Spotnitz is just the guy to take on Phillip K. Dick's novel of Nazis and the Japanese splitting up the United States after winning World War II, and the pilot concludes on a hell of a twist.

Audience Reviews for The Man in the High Castle: Season 1

Dark and menacing, well presented setting and cast of characters. Much more interesting than how action movies portray such a subject.

This is a fascinating series that presents an alternative history where Germany wins World War 2. It tries to be violent, thought provoking, melodramatic, and suspenseful at the same time. Not especially well acted, written or directed but the story pulls you in.

Excellency on it's best. From the writing to the very last acting, totally worthwhile
  • Jul 10, 2020
Kudos to the writer's behind this incredible story. The actors put on a first class performance. You get a realistic look how things may have been if the allies lost the war. This is drama at its finest.

A series you never want to see, The Man In The High Castle is nothing but a boring cliche filled boring characters
  • Jun 09, 2020
First season was amazing, must see. After watching the first episode you want to see more. Most actors did an amazing job. The season is definetly an awesome start of the series.

I regret that I didn't watch The Man in the High Castle sooner. A fascinating, nuanced tale of alternate reality that all centers around these mysterious films that depict...an alternate reality! That is, perhaps, the one thing that keeps the score from being higher. While it is captivating in its exploration of what might have been during WWII, there is a scent of 'Lost' in the air as well. What I mean by that, is that right now the series is a look at alternate history, but there are hints dropped throughout that they might be building towards a giant science-fiction twist that honestly has the potential to make or break the series. Whether or not I am correct remains to be seen, but as it stands right now, this is a solid series worthy of a lot more attention that its received.

This was a pretty amazing show. This will be a surprise to anyone who reads this but I absolutely hated the ending. Its was cheesey, boring, uninteresting, mondain, cliché and extremely anticlimactic. I was hoping that the N.A.Z.I would (no im not joking). Why can't they be realistic or why can't they just let them win for once. Inspector Kido joined the yakuza and Smith just kills himself and right after that people start coming out of the portal?!. The ending is garbage but the rest of it was very good. I know no one cares and that no one will read this but i just had to let this out.

The concept of The Man in the High Castle has a lot of potential, but the dull and overwrought plot threads combined with a totally wooden set of lead characters, makes the show a tedious watch. In Season 1 the world is barely introduced before the plot sends the characters into a bizarre "Wild West" subplot in a totally different part of the continent. Most of the subplots revolve around tapes created by the titular man, but the purpose of the tapes is never made clear, so they are a particularly uninteresting MacGuffin. Rufus Sewell as John Smith has the only engaging performance in the show, which is a bit unfortunate since it makes the viewer more interested in a Nazi than the "good guys." Toward the end of Season 1 the show abruptly changes genre and introduces some kind of supernatural or sci-fi element that has never been implied previously. It is very jarring and strange. It also feels like a cop out, since it doesn't make sense with what the viewer previously knew about the show's universe.
