The script lacked nuance, differentiating between goodies (brave, honourable, kind to cute children) and baddies (shouting, stabbing monks, robbing the dead) with all the subtlety of a trebuchet. Go to Full Review

The show already feels past its sell-by date; just a bunch of silly little boys running around haplessly fighting for no discernible reason. Go to Full Review
Sam Wollaston Guardian 05/31/2016
A swashbuckling (hard to avoid the word) romp that will appeal to anyone who has ever dreamed of adventure and romance, handsome beardy men with swords, and porcelain-skinned ladies bursting from bodices. Go to Full Review

With a little more daring this show could have been a jewel in the BBC's crown. Instead, I'll think back on it as ambitious, well-cast and with a handful of great episodes but rarely reaching its potential. Go to Full Review

As daft and unintentionally amusing as it is, when it comes to fun, escapist, glamorous TV, it can't be beaten. Go to Full Review

George K @RT70810130 Feb 18 I wrote a long post, but it failed to post. Here is the TLTR version: Seasons 1&2 were about 3.5 stars in my opinion. Not very realistic, but effort put in was there and acting was not bad. Season 3 took a serious turn for the worst. The writing for the most part, but a bit of casting silliness as well as a further decline in realism. We skimmed rapidly through episodes 5-9 and it was tiring even doing that. See more 06/06/2022 After Season 2's intense plot I wondered what S3 would bring. It amps up the carnage in a believable way and by Ep10 nicely brings all the strings of each story to a satisfying closure. I thought at one point they might be going for S4 but the very end is epic and feels like I've watched a movie. Sure I wanted more. But that's because this little series was so good. See more 12/28/2019 One of the best adaptations of the classic novel I ever seen. Need it more seasons. See more 07/19/2017 I'm terribly sad to see the show end. See more 07/14/2016 Sad to see this series end, but it was a very satisfying ending. See more Read all reviews
