The Newsroom is a little like 24 would be if there were no Jack Bauer, only the nerds back at CTU.

Flawed, but endlessly fascinating and enjoyable.

Aaron Sorkin's latest show is so serious it's ridiculous.
June 21, 2018
We really enjoyed The Newsroom... But Sorkin's desperation to say something serious and make statements are so ham-fisted and hackneyed that it will rub many up the wrong way and leave those that would normally sympathise with him feeling patronized.

The Newsroom isn't one giant sermon, and even a less-than-great entry from Sorkin is better than much of what graces the airwaves.

Aaron Sorkin can write crackling dialogue. Believable characters, not so much.
June 21, 2018
Here's a show the Founding Fathers (if no one else) would DVR.

The problem is Sorkin also happens to be an unabashedly left-wing writer who doesn't seem to credit anyone on the other side of the aisle with an intelligence to match his own.

For all its virtues, The Newsroom often feels shockingly dated... Far from portraying his reporters and producers as adults with rich, dark, complicated souls, Sorkin turns them into overgrown teenagers.

Aaron Sorkin, HBO and a show about network news seemed a perfect fit, but this first season had a rocky start.

Even with The West Wing creator at the wheel, HBO's Next Big Drama, Newsroom, which is set at a CNN-like network, disappoints.

Speechifying, crusading characters and high drama are acceptable when the future of the free world is at risk; less so when it's the future of an 11pm cable news show.

Frustration is the overwhelming feeling coming out of watching the entire first season of The Newsroom.

Ultimately, no one appears more deluded than Sorkin. His Will McAvoy is an insufferable blowhard, but the show spends most of its energy trying to convince us he's a saint.

This just in: The Newsroom stinks.
June 24, 2012
For all its flaws, The Newsroom is well worth watching, every week.
June 24, 2012
The format still has to work as a credible human drama. The fact that it doesn't entirely do that keeps Sorkin's message from being as effectively delivered as it could have been.

At its worst, the show chokes on its own sanctimony.

It's from that place of boundless optimism that I'll argue it's possible to enjoy The Newsroom - which is both wonderful and terrible - without necessarily believing a bloody word of it.
June 24, 2012
The Newsroom is a mess - albeit a fascinating, and at times genuinely entertaining, mess.
