The Newsroom: Season 3 Reviews

June 21, 2018
So much of this last season of The Newsroom, and especially the finale, read as Sorkin recognizing that there was a problem with his own show.

Look, The Newsroom was never going to be my favorite series, but I didn't expect it to make my head blow off, all over again, after all these years of peaceful hate-watching.

Even though HBO practically renewed and canceled season three on the same day, Sorkin seems to be making sure he leaves on his own terms, reminding everyone he's out for now but not out for good.

The Newsroom is being allowed to die a slow death with an abbreviated third and final season in which not enough has changed.
June 21, 2018
The frustrating thing is that, from my perspective as a journalism dinosaur who still remembers a pre-Internet newsroom, Sorkin is generally right... But Sorkin's characters are just so obnoxiously pious about it.

Watching Mr. Sorkin's Newsroom is a little like watching the news - if you don't like one segment, the odds are pretty good that there's a better one right after it.

I'm sure Aaron Sorkin thought he was going into The Newsroom with the best of intentions. But he came out of it with a preachy, gloppy mess that more often than not forgot that the core purpose of TV is to entertain.

At least The Newsroom is going out in a way that should make us remember it warmly.

Season 3 is full of complications from the bonds formed among the journalists, both platonically and romantically, and holds up to Sorkin's grand dialogue mixed with pithy, yet telling, exchanges.
November 10, 2014
No one is interested in Sorkin's ethical approach to the news. They're just not.

Maybe this has been the story it's been telling all along, the story of what happens when the most brilliant television show of all time is unappreciated by the masses and ultimately fails due to little fault of its own.

Say what you will about Sorkin, and many people have, but he understands television. Where now the second-most-important directive is: Finish big.
November 7, 2014
The same characters are here and they're still operating in Sorkin's preferred flawed-heroic mode. But it's more compelling watching them when Sorkin has simply put them under plausible pressures.

It can be so good, so subtly knowing and funny, and then all of a sudden you can feel like you're trapped on a train car with someone who's ranting into his cell phone and not using his indoor voice.

I'm happy to report that the abbreviated final season - there are only half a dozen episodes - seems poised to burnish the show's legacy, not tarnish it.

Halfway through this sprint to the finish, The Newsroom continues to represent a failed experiment -- a series that won't win any converts and too often risks irritating what should ostensibly be its allies.
November 5, 2014
Whatever one can say about The Newsroom, it's never boring.
November 5, 2014
The new season of The Newsroom is streamlined to its purpose, and Sorkin's issues of choice make the first three episodes a slow build to thrilling entertainment.
