The Prisoner: Miniseries (2009)

TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: Meekly echoing the classic orignial series, The Prisoner is a ponderous, pretentious sci-fi mystery with giant plot holes and many moments of general incoherence.

Critic Reviews for The Prisoner Miniseries

Looking for logic in a remake of "The Prisoner" - even if you've never seen the original version - is like asking for two-fisted shoot-outs on "Mad Men," or for more tasteful humor on "Two and a Half Men."

For the characters and for the viewers, the miniseries is a plodding excursion on the road to nowhere.

As the story moves along, we understand Six's desire to get out.

Unfortunately the new Prisoner's dominant characteristics are its sluggish tempo, limited vision and inability to drag itself out of the shadow of the Patrick McGoohan original.

This new Prisoner tries to be mysterious and compelling, like ABC's Lost. But it's not so much Lost as Misguided.

The producers approach the concept with all due seriousness and, for all the enigmatic details, a literalness that loses the dark humor, satirical wit and the allegorical resonance of the original.

Not even the combined forces of Jesus and Gandalf can save this from being anything more than just a passable time killer.

The opening episode and the closing episode were decent, but everything in between seems to be just fluff to add confusion to the audience via the characters themselves.
