"The Thick of It" satirizes the inner workings of modern British government, with the focus on the fictitious Department of Social Affairs and Citizenship, a rather broad title that allows many political themes and viewpoints to be introduced. The department is run by an appointed minister, one who of course is depicted as bumbling, overmatched and out of touch with the public.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Armando Ianucci's gloriously profane satire concludes at the peak of its dyspeptic hilarity, combining its withering eye for political machinations and its Shakespearean flow of curse words to deliver a harrowingly funny sendoff.

One of the great strengths of the series is that while its situations seem straight out of the realm of caricature, its characters do not. Characters do, at times, register genuine consciences. Go to Full Review

It's the political specificity of The Thick of It's situations that give it bite. And the way it draws its various characters gives it a kind of poignance for all its hard-hearted cynicism. Go to Full Review
Sam Wollaston Guardian 08/31/2018
There is an unsubtlety, a too-obviousness, about it that makes me wonder whether Armando Iannucci, what with all his other projects like taking over America and the world, had let his eye off this one. Go to Full Review

The brain-child of satirist-extraordinaire Armando Iannucci, the show features more jokes-per-minute...as it focusses on spin and the way it has come to dominate modern politics. Go to Full Review

03/19/2020 By far the funniest show I have ever seen - the profanities of Tucker and crew are Glasgow humour at its very best See more 02/26/2019 One of the rare examples of a series getting consistently better as it goes on. Series 4 is a masterclass. See more 07/11/2014 Though it didn't shoot out of the gate (the first two episodes are rather shrug-inducing), The Thick of It: Season 4 goes out on the highest of notes. The final two episodes are both emotionally resonant and powerfully written. There are two absolutely fantastic moments in the final episode: Glenn going out with a bang, and the "job interview" between Malcolm and Ollie. Fantastic stuff! 9/10 See more 06/21/2014 The weakest season of the series (so far) with a poor chemistry between the cast, complicatedly parallel plot with confusing script and directing. A more cynical Malcolm Tucker cannot help either, naturally. See more Read all reviews
