The Thick of It: Season 4 Reviews

December 13, 2018
One of the great strengths of the series is that while its situations seem straight out of the realm of caricature, its characters do not. Characters do, at times, register genuine consciences.

It's the political specificity of The Thick of It's situations that give it bite. And the way it draws its various characters gives it a kind of poignance for all its hard-hearted cynicism.

There is an unsubtlety, a too-obviousness, about it that makes me wonder whether Armando Iannucci, what with all his other projects like taking over America and the world, had let his eye off this one.

Iannucci finds a way to take obscene language that would sound like overkill from the pen of any other writer and make it sound like poetry.

This year's glorious fourth series of The Thick of It consistently found the show not firing barbs afterwards - as satire generally does - but being ahead of or alongside the game.
October 29, 2012
Most devastatingly, the show's heart and soul, the ruthless and foulmouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker ends up deflated and defeated, gazing past the camera into the abyss.

This is a grounded political farce that expertly straddles the line between realistic and ridiculous, complete with lots of inventive swearing and winks to current political events.
