The first two episodes feel like the rebirth of a recharged series, with Dobrev taking the reins with gusto as she emotes, suffers, hungers and satiates her bloodlust in various surprising ways.

I like that Jeremy's still so anti-vampire.

Realistically, there's only so long so many supernaturals could reside in one place in secret.

The best thing about this episode for me was the juxtaposition between Stefan and Damon's characters and how delicately balanced it was despite the high stakes.

Audience Reviews for The Vampire Diaries: Season 4

Everything changes in Season 4 of The Vampire Diaries as Elena finds her mortal life ripped away from her when she becomes a vampire. It's an electrifying season of twists and turns that takes the audience on an exciting journey. The season begins with Elena struggling to keep her humanity as a newly turned vampire, but she finds her old life slipping away; meanwhile Klaus reveals the existence of a vampire cure, which begins a race between the Salvatores and the Origins to find it (though each character has a different reason for wanting it). The characters are used quite well, and the story arcs do an impressive job at exploring new facets of their personalities. Nina Dobrev in particular does an especially good job, as she's called on to take her character to places she's never had to before. Yet there are a few misfires with a couple of plots that don't work out, but overall the tension and suspense gradually builds throughout the season. In more ways than one The Vampire Diaries: Season 4 is a game changer that allows the series to explore new territory and move in a new direction.
