Having previewed all 13 episodes, I won't give away what happens to them, except to say that as usual, the program reverses your expectations while breaking your heart.

While the fourth-season opener features the usual warp-speed intercuts of a dozen plot lines, its central focus is ingeniously linking the tribulations of 1) street-corner drug dealing and 2) running for mayor of Baltimore.

Yes, it requires attention, as does any show that tries to tell a full-bodied version of the truth. But it repays every moment devoted in full.

Easily the best show currently on television, and if I ever sit down to make a list of the all-time top shows, it will certainly sit comfortably in the top five.

More or less universally recognized as the The Wire's crown jewel, season 4 is indeed brilliant, and it does contain the most trenchant criticism the show makes.

The only thing harder to take in season four than the paths that these kids are set on is the realization that so many of them, and so many like them, never stood a chance in the first place.

The Wire covers over 12 hours what any other cop show would play out in just one episode, and it's this microscopic attention to detail, so perfectly executed, that raises it above every other cop show on television.

Like every well-constructed 19th-century English novel, most scenes in The Wire operate on multiple levels, as characters either adapt or fail to come to grips with their fate in West Baltimore's ever shifting urban wasteland.

Somehow, The Wire remains as invigorating as it is disheartening. For all of their flaws, the characters have real, subtle charms that win us over, slowly but surely, until we can't stand to see harm come to any of them.

The Wire is a gripping saga of struggle, of people trying not just to cope with corruption and hopelessness but to conquer them. So is The Wire as good as ever? Perhaps even better.
