Having previewed all 13 episodes, I won't give away what happens to them, except to say that as usual, the program reverses your expectations while breaking your heart.

If you have only one hour a week for television, give it to The Wire. Even if you think you don't have time for television, find an hour a week to watch the fourth season of The Wire. It's a masterpiece.

While the fourth-season opener features the usual warp-speed intercuts of a dozen plot lines, its central focus is ingeniously linking the tribulations of 1) street-corner drug dealing and 2) running for mayor of Baltimore.

Yes, it requires attention, as does any show that tries to tell a full-bodied version of the truth. But it repays every moment devoted in full.

By the fourth and fifth episode, once again you're caught in a bracingly complex, enriching tale you don't want to end.

Somehow, The Wire remains as invigorating as it is disheartening. For all of their flaws, the characters have real, subtle charms that win us over, slowly but surely, until we can't stand to see harm come to any of them.

The Wire is a gripping saga of struggle, of people trying not just to cope with corruption and hopelessness but to conquer them. So is The Wire as good as ever? Perhaps even better.
