Critic Reviews for The Academy Awards 68th Oscars

All Critics (11) | Top Critics (7)

After last year's disappointing turn by Letterman, Goldberg redeemed the host's role with a confident performance that cast a charming, breezy spell over a long evening.

On one of those rare years when there was some true suspense to go with the line "And the Oscar goes to ...," Monday's telecast proved to be a classy and, yes, long and puffy affair, with more memorable moments than in recent years.

The Oscar show seems a cross between anachronism and self-parody now and this year's edition was neither terrible nor wonderful. It was just there, big and loud and from here to eternity.

Goldberg's opening monologue was admirably tart and brief. In collaboration with first-time producer Quincy Jones, Goldberg presided over something highly unusual -- a shrewd Oscar telecast, rather than the usual merely crass one.

Goldberg, after her promising opening burst, settled into bland script reading that made one long for David Letterman's cranky unpredictability in the role last year.

Goldberg's swagger and relaxed, confident performance itself, though, was symbolic of her whopping improvement as host over her showing on the 1994 Oscars. She was very funny this time.

[Producer Quincy] Jones knew exactly what he was doing. With Whoopi Goldberg as its quick-witted host, the show soon established an energetic tone and a refreshing impatience with Oscar traditions.

The Quincy Jones-produced broadcast, which ran about 3 1/4 hours, was remarkable for its lack of gaffes and embarrassing moments... Oddly, the touching moments this year were truly touching, and not just for Hollywood.

Goldberg is no Billy Crystal, but she was a considerable improvement on last year's presenter, David Letterman... For a while, it looked like Quincy Jones has genuinely revamped the ceremony, making it snappier and pacier.

Whoopi Goldberg returned to host the Oscars after last year's dismal experiment with smirky David Letterman. Her warm, unpretentious humor kept the self-important ceremony from being too stuffy, and she kept us laughing all night.

Whoopi seemed much more comfortable than she was two years ago as host and had a decent amount of ad-libs during the show, which had an unusual number of emotional highs.
