The Academy Awards: 78th Oscars Reviews

November 6, 2019
The Academy Awards have a new king, and his name is Jon Stewart. The brash, New York-based comedian from Comedy Central made the finest debut as host of the Oscars since Billy Crystal undertook the role in 1990.

Stewart turned in a refreshing if somewhat underpowered performance. In keeping with The Daily Show's predilection for self-conscious naffness, Stewart's delivery always maintains a marvelous faltering modesty

A couple of Stewart's jokes fell flat early on, but he bounced back and performed admirably, filling the host's tuxedo with steadiness and grace.

I'd give Stewart's 10-minute opening monologue a gentleman's B -- intermittently funny, but not what I'd expected from the current god of comedy.

The best opening half hour of any Oscar ceremony EVER -- the funniest monologue, the best clips... Jon Stewart killed.

Stewart, like Rock before him, was not afraid to singe egos, going after Angelina Jolie, Scientology, the Baldwin brothers, etc. It might not bring him back, he might not have been the end-all for his die-hards, but he didn't do a face-plant either.

[Jon Stewart] didn't sell out to host the Super Bowl of awards shows. He didn't aim for the old-school vaudeville shtick of Billy Crystal to broaden his appeal. He was his Comedy Central self throughout: wry, deadpan, flip, and slightly subversive.

Jon Stewart played it right down the middle, avoiding sharp political humor, steering clear of biting industry riffs and even firing off some one liners that could have easily have been said by consummate emcee Bob Hope.

Warm and upbeat, and more relaxed than many Oscarcasts. There were a lot of questions about the choice of Stewart as emcee, and he answered them all almost immediately, with an opening monologue that was on target, topical and funny.

Overall, Stewart was sharp, clean, and sensibly deferential. Once, looking back at Joan Didion's first novel, Martin Amis called it "contently minor, above all," and the line applies here.

After a slightly clunky start, I thought Jon Stewart's weisenheimer act was nearly faultless.

Jon Stewart carried off his role with cautious aplomb, even if the pre-taped segments were his best material.

Jon Stewart, in his Daily Show prime, made a strong first impression.

I felt that this year's Oscar Ceremony displayed, in its entirety, a very independent and irreverent spirit. The Academy did not follow suit to what the critics had been saying all year, and I believe the best performances were truly recognized.
