Enter Stewart, who was truly a fish out of water: stiff, uncomfortable and swallowed by a podium onstage.

I appear to have been misled about the primary goal of these kudofests. I'd thought it was to honor people and allow them their minute or (mercy) two minutes in a spotlight... But apparently, it's just about riffing, posturing and promoting.

Ostensibly honoring a "Return to Glamour," the show was an almost unceasing parade of speeches and clips vaunting Hollywood's invaluable worth as a force for societal improvement.

The three-plus hours of the 78th annual Academy Awards preceding that upset were so predictable and airless that the surprise victory for T6M's "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" seemed positively revelatory.

This was, by and large, a sedate and politic affair. Host Jon Stewart's monologue was gently satirical without ever straying into controversy, while the various winners seemed at pains to behave themselves.

Though Stewart was a breath of fresh air, the Oscar ceremony was still stuffy and bloated.

It's hard to believe that professional entertainers could have put together a show less entertaining than this year's Oscars, hosted with a smug humorlessness by comic Jon Stewart, a sad and pale shadow of great hosts gone by.

[Jon Stewart's] usually impeccable blend of puckishness and self-effacement fell flat in the service of Oscar. But he wasn't alone. The rest of the broadcast was largely bland and by-the-numbers.

Somehow, the roaring vacuum of these Oscars even killed the chi of the Golden Boy, our very own Jon Stewart. He began apologizing within 20 minutes, once he realized he'd never get his ankles out of the anaconda.

Classy opening, classy set, classy host, but the 78th Annual Academy Awards were a big-time bore.
