News & Interviews for The Academy Awards: 91st Oscars
That favoring of all things safe and standard and neat soured the awards for me, partly because there was so little else for the show to hide behind.
The show's lack of a host and the decision to cut back on the kinds of clips packages that routinely bloat the evening made the show move along quickly... but it was jarring when a disembodied voice said, "welcome to the Oscars."
In future years, The Academy would be ill-advised to rely so heavily on great speeches, a bevy of surprises, and a hostless show garnering this much buzz. But in 2019, the Oscars got to be the Oscars, and everyone won.
The show, as usual, had some rocky moments, but overall it was a lively, well-paced and entertaining affair.
The night was protracted, of course, but less irritating than it might have been.
Did you notice there was no Oscars host this year? Yeah, I didn't care either.
Despite such a plethora of blockbuster luminaries, the show itself felt harried and disconnected like the scroll of a Twitter feed and not Tinseltown's biggest night.
