Season 3 muddied the water in several ways, starting and ending with Noah (Dominic West) - the show's most frustrating character.

The Showtime series has just gotten unnecessarily odd.

Even when I don't agree with all of the show's choices, it's a lot of fun to write about, just because there's so much there. And the performances are always spectacular.

The show can't linger with what this means. It can't stay with the idea that hardship has just made Noah into more of who he already was. That's not how drama works, it seems to want to tell us; drama needs some kind of forward progression.

Noah's prison experiences, which are recalled in the show's familiar flashback framework, add a new texture to the show.

[It] didn't take a different narrative gaze so much as became a MUCH MORE HORRIFYING SHOW.

This new season proves that The Affair should have ended last season. [Full Review in Spanish]

The riveting second half of this episode ushered The Affair into film noir, the director Jeffrey Reiner vividly using eerie deep-focus shots to externalize Noah's dread.

The Affair [Season 3] feels like a completely different series.

There's barely a single character here you don't want to throttle at some stage, yet such forces make them all utterly compelling, laid bare in their erotic drive, their self-delusions, justifications or gender biases.

The strain of attempting to wrap an arty veneer around a pulpy sex show is starting to show.

The most impressive part of The Affair remains its ability to juggle so many perspectives.

There is just so much TV at this point that The Affair often gets left out of a lot of conversations, but it's plotting like this that should act as a reminder that this show has some of the most strongly defined characters on the medium.

The season premiere slowly builds and includes a lengthy and timely discussion of what constitutes sexual assault.

What will The Affair be without suspense? It wouldn't be The Affair, but don't worry, they have a new storyline and I'm already hooked.

After flirting with scandalous soap opera in season 2, The Affair has returned to a more tempered, more focused narrative in season 3 - and the show is all the better for it.

The Affair, co-created by Sarah Treem, who writes many of the episodes, and Hagai Levy (In Treatment), remains absorbing and maddening, illuminating and frustratingly opaque, all in equal measure.

All of which is my way of saying that the first few heavily burdened episodes of the third season of Showtime's sharply satisfying drama The Affair leave me a bit ambivalent about the idea of moving along.

Each individual hour of The Affair holds your attention, and perhaps it's best to just keep watching before deciding whether the overarching narrative is cohering in a satisfying way.
November 17, 2016
The Affair continues to keep us intrigued, which is always an accomplishment worth noting; we'll definitely be watching as Season 3 proceeds. If only because the show has built up a rich tapestry beyond its most problematic character.
