What to Know

Critics Consensus

Employing some risky stylistic flourishes that Andy Warhol himself might have approved of, these Diaries are a revelatory glimpse into the inner life of a purposefully unknowable artist.

Experts and friends can point to pictures and passages and make pronouncements about who Warhol was, but these pieces do not complete the puzzle. That's by design. Go to Full Review

The parallels Rossi draws between Warhol’s visual art, the performance art that was his public persona and the man he was among the people he cared for greatly enriched my understanding of his body of work. Go to Full Review

For all that the series meticulously reveals, it only goes so far in penetrating Warhol's protective shell, and like its subject, alternates between being fascinating and frustrating. Go to Full Review

The Andy Warhol Diaries feel like the visual representation of a diary come to life, cracking open the myth and legends of someone seemingly familiar and seeing someone wholly new and changed like any great piece of art does when you look at it too long Go to Full Review

Lexi B 12/24/2024 I'm writing to express my deep admiration for Andy Warhol. I believe he is one of the greatest artists of all time. However, I'm concerned that activists were involved in this film have focused primarily on his sexuality and experiences of oppression. Crazy people obsessed with oppression ruin something great once again. See more S W 11/16/2024 Many many thanks to everyone who labored to bring this series to fruition. The dedication and care put into this project is evident, the result a not only poignant but well balanced view of Warhol’s life and accomplishments as one of the most observant and impactful cultural mediums of the twentieth century. Hauntingly beautiful and also tragic, depicting the importance of love in our lives, this docuseries delivers a profound message. See more Barbara K @frenchcocci 10/28/2023 Absolutely amazing, a must see See more Iman R @irod78 09/05/2023 I was reluctant at first to watch this because there's been so much about Warhol and he is such a sort of over saturated artist so to say. However I started watching and couldn't stop. It's such a well made unprecedented look into Warhol's world not just as an artist but an actual person, not just the persona he exhibited to the world. Its crazy how I even bought into it, thinking that he was this unfeeling asexual being. It was so profound to learn sorta why and how he created that persona on order to exist and be accepted, heard, embraced as a homosexual man/artist in a world that was so cruel and unaccepting and then became a champion almost inadvertently to outsiders like him as a result. I think it was brilliant how contemporary interviews with people who knew him served to explain and enhance his diary entries, as well as all of the great audio visual footage. I really have a much deeper appreciation of Andy Warhol now and I really think this should win an Emmy. See more dave d 09/23/2022 A huge undertaking, but ultimately just empty calories, 'The Andy Warhol Diaries' won't tell you much about the artist who just maybe was a lot more boring than we all want to acknowledge. When the story veers away from the titular subject, it gains momentum, only to be slowed by the constant sexual wonderings of Warhol. This doc is obsessed with sex and celebrity culture. Oddly, the last episode was the best. It ties up a lot of loose ends about the people that were important parts of Warhol's life that the viewer should be wondering what happened to. It's a noble effort, but it's just noise. See more 03/31/2022 If you find the work of Andy Warhol as boring as watching grass grow, but yet still try to understand him (surely there must be something more?), you'll be further disappointed by the man after enduring only one episode of "The Andy Warhol Diaries."
