The performances were consistently good perhaps at times better than good, particularly from Matthew Rhys, who seems to outshine Clare Danes. And, despite an 8 part series, the pacing was consistent. The series shortcoming lies with the script. I kept waiting for something novel, something not, at least in part, cliche. Alas, my impressions were proven correct by the time credits started rolling. I have a lot of respect for Ms. Danes, and she did a very good job in this series - unfortunately, the script did not serve her or her character with the level required for her to shine. The same could perhaps be said about Matthew Rhys, but his character was more fleshed out and played to his dynamic range. Decisions were oftentimes there to serve the plot rather than being organic. Claire Danes was channeling her character from Homeland, just slightly less over the top. However it ended up being an ok rather than a must watch. Clare Danes seems to act every scene with angst. It's like she can only play the same character that she did in the excellent Homeland. However her character in Homeland was bi-polar and she was often off her meds. In this she just comes across as annoying. That aside the whole thing gets wrapped up a bit too easily and quickly at the end.
