TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: An earnest but shallow take on the Greatest Story ever Told, The Bible suffers from leaden pacing and mediocre special effects.

This production makes Cecil B. DeMille look like a sober theologian.

I won't presume to judge the result for accuracy in relation to the source material. However, purely as drama, The Bible is -- how can I put this politely? -- ridiculous.

The Bible takes a familiarly earnest and plodding approach with a lot of overwrought acting by a cast of a thousand accents.

The Bible has its moments, but the producers should have gone for the Gospel truth.

This Bible probably won't offend anyone, but it's hard to imagine it will inspire anyone, either.

Producer Burnett's first fully scripted series provides strong evidence that he should resume doing what no one else does better. "Reality" series are his forte. The Bible is Old and New Testament to that.

It's grittier-looking than most Bible stories on film, and the special effects aren't bad. But the leading figures feel like stick figures to me.

Mar 8, 2013 | Full Review…

The Bible tackles the most ubiquitous Bible stories in crude, broad strokes, with acting and writing taking a back seat to cheesy CGI spectacle that's likely to make one pine for the relative subtlety and craft of Cecil B. DeMille.

Sunday's premiere is indeed true to the spirit of the good book if a bit sparing on details.

Yet as artistically lacking as I found The Bible, I won't be upset, exactly, if there are more like it, even though I would never willingly choose to watch that.
