What to Know

Critics Consensus

Undoubtedly the most heart-filled of the Blackadder series, Blackadder Goes Forth somehow manages to find real humor in the horrors of warfare, before coming to an appropriately poignant and poetic close.

For all its formulaic nature, the show was consistently sharp and funny, and even, with its fourth series, Blackadder Goes Forth showed off a beating heart of compassion. Go to Full Review

The show elicits a few helpless belly laughs, but it takes an initial period of adjustment to get to them. Go to Full Review

"Goodbyeee" is a masterpiece, a hilarious and painful crystallization of everything Blackadder does well. It is without a doubt the best episode of the series and more than that, it's one of the best series finales in television history. Go to Full Review

The last episode, however, although completely over the top...has to be one of the greatest interpretations of the madness of war that has ever been put on film. Go to Full Review

The satirical pen of Curtis and Elton was at its sharpest when it came to tackling the topic of the Great War in 1989's Blackadder Goes Forth. Go to Full Review

Despite the show's comedic overpinnings, there are emotional underpinnings that were missing from the previous series, where moments of danger felt camp...It's poetic. Four star series. Go to Full Review

M B Sep 15 Best British comedy series ever, very clever writing and flawless execution by future superstars. This last season is emotionally moving too being about World War 1. See more Petros T @PetrosTserpelis 08/02/2021 Every other line of dialogue in "Blackadder Goes Forth" is as side-splitting as it gets. The cast consisting of the dream-team of Rowan Atkinson, Tony Robinson, Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry and Tim McInnerny is of course exquisite, the power-play dynamics of their archetypal characters flourishing in the context of an army. The final Blackadder series is as razor-sharp funny and endlessly quotable as one would expect after its predecessors, and yet its finale is unpredictably but fittingly poignant.
