The Black Donnellys: Season 1 (2007)

Critic Consensus: The Black Donnellys has Irish swagger to spare and an appealing cast, but the series' overreliance on signature tropes of better mob stories only underscores its lack of authenticity and imagination.

Critic Reviews for The Black Donnellys Season 1

All Critics (30) | Top Critics (21)

The Black Donnellys is not top of the world -- sorry, Ma -- or the second coming of The Sopranos. The new drama is old wine poured into fancy, contemporary bottles.

Stay with it and you'll get to know one of the season's most compelling new characters. He's Tommy Donnelly (Jonathan Tucker), a hurting, harrowing, heart-in-the-right-place anti-hero.

Maybe the mob is not a subject broadcast TV should tackle. Audiences have seen the best on this subject, and this medium includes no examples. The Donnellys does not change that.

It's a swell story, if sometimes grim, featuring a panoply of rough customers.

The show has borrowed from many superior mob movies and series... Unfortunately, thematic ingenuity isn't among the many things The Black Donnellys has borrowed.

The show is highly erratic, veering from the comedic to the grotesque to the poignant to the overwrought... Still, there are some fine fraternal moments here, and some moral force, and a good slow-motion pummeling.

Like any good drama series, Donnellys has several plot lines in play at all times. But with all the different characters, as well as an unreliable narrator, only the most astute viewers will be able to keep track of everything that's going on.

As a mob tale, it doesn't come close to matching up to the genre's hallmarks. As an angsty drama, it does go overboard sometimes. But the show is incredibly watchable

Not as good as The Sopranos. Not as psychologically deep or chilling and certainly not as brutal (though it tries). But here's the thing: The Black Donnellys is good. Very, very good.

Haggis and Moresco have done strong work here, making a lively pilot that's filled with good musical choices and engaging visuals.

Audience Reviews for The Black Donnellys: Season 1

It might not be the most original story ever, but it delivers in execution. Worst thing about this show was it being cut short and never being able to run itâ??s course except for an online episode to give some kind of closure.
