Tv Season Info

The sumptuous Renaissance-era soap opera-costume drama that is a blend of Corleones and Sopranos family-and-palace intrigue along the Appian Way and other European locales launches a third season. The poisoned Pope Alexander (Jeremy Irons) fights for his life as cardinals jockey to wrest the papacy from him, and Cesare(François Arnaud) and Micheletto (Sean Harris) try to track the assassin. Meanwhile, Della Rovere (Colm Feore) readies to make his move; and Catherina Sforza (Gina McKee) dispatches her own personal assassin to unseat the Borgias. Machiavelli (Julian Bleach) works his malevolent magic to ensure that Cesare's diplomatic mission to France is a success as Lucrezia (Holliday Grainger) devises a plot against King Ferdinand (Matias Varela). The season ends with Alexander and Cesare reconciling, and Cesare marching his army to lay siege to Forli.

Indeed, the show's frothy mixture of costume drama and soap opera, taken to hedonistic extremes, allows for unapologetically rich and sublimely perverse moments.

Ultimately, what was cleverly billed as a 15th-century version of The Sopranos is at best an impersonation of a quality cable drama, dressed up in fabulous flowing frocks.
