The Boys: Season 1 Reviews

August 19, 2019
The Boys is an expert deconstruction of superhero stories, with an appropriately wintery view of institutional power, be it corporate, governmental, religious, or caped.

Starr, Moriarty, and Shue bring extra dimensions to their characters, too, making "The Boys" all that much more fun (you know, when it's not very, very dark).

All of that said, the series is quite enjoyable, particularly in a fast and clever first episode.

The title may be the name of badasses tasked with taking these mega-human weapons of mass destruction down. What it's really referring to is its ideal demographic.

The show's best idea is its ultimate antagonist: The ceaseless working giant of corporate capitalism and the people who enable it. Those criminals are all too real, which is exactly The Boys' point.

Plenty of genuine laughs to be had amid the general drama, horror, violence, gore and pathos.

The Boys isn't the bold deconstruction of superhero tropes its creators seem to think it is.

It's a tough balance for a comic book to maintain, but the source material had the freedom of time between trips into this grimy world, whereas Amazon is asking us to wallow in the muck for eight episodes in a row.

The cast is fine, particularly Shue, who is icily effective; Quaid, whose neurotic but brave fumblings are endearing; and Urban, who is Hughie's gonzo guide.

The Boys fails to be truly subversive in ways that count more than just wagging a middle finger at Marvel CEO Kevin Feige.

The Boys works on multiple levels. Smartly cast, it operates as a mystery, a satire, a battle of wits and perhaps foremost, a provocative consideration of the dangers of hero worship.

The Boys could become any number of things as it rolls on. But the tone it struck in its first outing was a dully familiar one.

I'll have to check in again on The Boys after a few more episodes to get a sense of whether or not the encroaching cynicism topples what I find initially promising here.
