Diane Kruger is perfectly icy as the "unusual" Detective Sonya Cross. Demian Bichir is super as her Mexican counterpart Marco Ruiz: kindly, world-weary, with a quantity of crumpled charisma.

The Bridge manages the neat trick of being both tough and entertaining; it's a made-up story that feels true.

[A] dark but artful and sophisticated drama.

You know you're watching a great serial-killer mystery when the serial killer is the least interesting part.

You can feel a network's growing pains as you watch The Bridge, but growing pains are good. They're what you feel when you're evolving.
July 3, 2018
The Bridge remains a compelling thriller bolstered by excellent performances and an intriguing political message.
July 13, 2017
The true virtue of The Bridge is not Cross's and Ruiz's police work -- by now, we've all seen enough cops for a lifetime -- but what it casually reveals about life on the border.

The show has routinely opted for the artful storytelling option instead of the most satisfying one. It's a series that trusts its vision and resists the urge to stray from it.

This does not look like a show which sets out to reinvent the wheel, just produce a very efficient and overall solid wheel.

Thanks to deft work from Homeland writer Meredith Stiehm, there's plenty of payoff if you stick with it to see how the seemingly unconnected story lines shake out in the end.

The Bridge sets the bar high with its early episodes -- it's easily the best new show of the summer so far. Here's hoping the rest of the season follows suit.

The Bridge hits all the right notes as a compelling, addictive modern cable drama. It may be the most sophisticated crime drama since The Wire. Or it may be its own beast altogether.

Wednesday's 91-minute pilot is full of surprises, large and small, and sets the scene for a larger story.
July 10, 2013
Even as all of these seeming oppositions are set up, the show insists on the blurring of lines, the bridges as well as the borders.

Cross The Bridge at your own peril. You just might get stranded in the summer's best mystery.

The Bridge has tapped into a potentially rich vein, dealing with a politically motivated murder on the border and some promising characters. But whether it can follow through remains to be seen.

It's certainly a world worth exploring further.

What could be a relentlessly grim procedural (again, The Killing) is instead a compelling drama that works (so far, at least) on a number of levels.
