Critic Reviews for The Bureau Season 1

All Critics (3) | Top Critics (1)

It's smoothly surfaced and subtly shaded down to the last moue, side glance, and eyebrow inflection, more of a slow-burning-fuse series than a constant jolter.

Titled Les Bureau des Legendes in France, this is a smart and nuanced drama of international espionage and intelligence in a real-world setting.

Not bad in general. But the Series One in Episode Two contains a message denigrating Eastern European (Ukrainian) women. At one moment when meeting with the spy, his Iraqi lover ask him how he explained his absence from home to the colleagues and says: "You told them you went to meet a Ukrainian slut? Did not you:)", to which he replies "Yes, I did". Considering insulting stereotypes the French already have to women from Eastern Europe, including such passages in the series exacerbates those stereotypes even further.

Highly addictive, captivating series with smarts, style , and stealth. The pace starts slow and builds intensity in subtle ways that make you want to watch a whole season in one sitting. All you want in a great TV show! Watch it on Sundance Now.

This is a really good mid east spy thriller. It is in French with English subtitles.

    Smart, tense, human.

The best thing I've ever seen on TV is The Wire. Well, "was" the Wire. Until The Bureau. Every single episode is better than the last, for THREE STRAIGHT SEASONS. A mind-boggling feat at this level of writing, acting and direction. My conclusion is that the authenticity and stunning twists (a current episode will shed dramatic new light on a previous episode, changing its entire meaning) could only be engineered by spies writing about spycraft, which is apparently what happened.

I am amazed there is no reviews for The Bureau as I consider it the best contemporary suspense drama series to date. From France it has the same level of production excellence as Spiral.
