NYPD detective Avraham "Avi" Avraham relies on his own belief in humanity to solve crimes. As seemingly routine investigations turn upside down, Avi's intuitive understanding of mankind guides his spiritual mission to do justice. But when humanity is not so easily found, the complexity of Avi's cases heightens, often to life-threatening stakes.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Hollowing out an intriguing idea with simpleminded execution, this rote spiritual procedural goes to prove that some callings aren't worth answering.

There is promise in The Calling -- a man whose instinct and religion give him an edge -- but it all peters out by the last episodes. Go to Full Review

The Calling amounts to little more than watchable gruel and holier-than-thou lip service, even if the latter is from a presence as gentle as Avi's. Go to Full Review

Where a shrewder series might have dug deeper, eventually hitting on a distinctive identity of its own, The Calling only grows shallower and duller as its eight-episode series progresses. Go to Full Review

The plot thickens. The writing slogs. I found myself growing increasingly uninterested. It just doesn’t have the necessary hook or energy that would have given the story life. Go to Full Review

Zack’s story is free-floating, not anchored to the continuing narrative enough for us to care about it. Go to Full Review

Shanell H @Nellz00 6d I absolutely loved it and honestly cannot understand the low rating at all. I appreciated the unique twist of how he solved the cases and respected the victims. It was like a version of Elementary. I am a true lover of these types of shows; Harrow, Law & Order, FBI, Murdock Mysteries etc See more Labor Of Love D @Shellbee Dec 6 I really enjoyed The Calling with the hint of mystery in the main characters beliefs, morals & logic. It shows a different way of police investigation. The drama shows calm and respect rather than shoot them up or violent force. I am disappointed that the drama has not been able to produce a second season. See more Monica S. @MonicaS Sep 11 Best crime show! Definitely worth watching. Waiting for season 2. See more Per S Jul 18 A durable and different whodunnit but also what did they do(?) psychological crime thriller. Jeff Wilbush is the perfect cast for the role as the eccentric and highly unconventional NYPD detective Avraham. The plot reveals layer by layer, and is quite unpredictable, though not everything is fully plausible. Unfortunately, occasional acting performances are one or two degrees down from the top level. Still, hard to get why the tomatometer is only 25%. However, the public likes it. See more Rosalyn S 02/13/2025 A fresh and modern way to tell the old detective stories. No forensics or wise cracking old boys just a new face using his humanity to feel out the truth. Good characters and great acting using mostly new faces and not the usual suspects from the detective series melting pot. Storylines based on the books have been well cared for. Loved it. See more Ronald P @RonaldPogatchnik 01/01/2025 Great series. Kept me interested to the point I binged watched it! Rotten tomatoes reviews that are negative is indicative of the thrash that lot thinks are worth while. See more Read all reviews
