Critics Consensus

Strangely earnest, The Circle at times struggles to find the drama, but those looking for a weirdly compelling social experiment may find themselves more invested than expected.

The flattening confusion of social media can make this setup into a game, but it's hardly a show. It's a bunch of reality TV players in search of a drama.

At the end of the day, The Circle is more of the junk food TV that's been clogging airwaves and streaming services for over a decade now, but a stranger undercurrent lies within...

This brilliantly cast and surprisingly addictive reality show puts a new twist on the old popularity-contest format.

isolates its contestants, illustrates our depressing tendency to superficially judge each other, and has just enough flashes of charm, humor, insight, and humanity to keep us staring at our screens to make a giant corporation money

What's been most fun about watching this show is seeing, in real time, the players decide for themselves what it takes to charm strangers and get the furthest in The Circle.

Jan 17, 2020 | Full Review…

Essentially, The Circle is a thought-provoking social experiment disguised as trashy reality TV. The results are alternately hilarious, disturbing, heartwarming, and revelatory.

Reality series is a weird, compelling popularity contest.

It's an American version of a show with the same name that started in the U.K. in 2018. And it is perfect.

Surprisingly relaxing and life-affirming. Like in any other reality TV show designed to expose human foibles, it has its cringe moments and villains. But the gentler, more benevolent elements of human nature rise to the top like cream.

Very little s--t-talking. For the first time in a reality show, I have completely agreed with the eliminations the influencers decided on, managing to see through the bullshit to hone in on the most insincere among the group.

Complete crap. Fake, dumb, stereotypical. Just no.

It's like watching a social experiment as torture. Still enjoyable.

2020 #229: THE CIRCLE (NETFLIX) I was apprehensive about this but my manager told me to watch it and I'm glad I did. Once you get past the first few eps it's really engaging. You get to know these people. You hate some of them and others you desperately root for. Like the delicious, charming and loyal Joey Sasso and ed eason isn't too bad either. 4.5/5

This show is so bad, that I went ahead and made a Rotten Tomatoes account to give it the poorest rating possible. Seeing this was at a 70% audience rating was enough to make me need to bring that number down. God, this is the worst thing ever.

Absolutely awful. Couldn't even watch a full one episode. Shows what is wrong with society these days in that everyone is afraid to talk and introverted. People sitting in their own places trying to figure out who is who based on what they say through a social media app?? Faking your true identity to win a game? What if someone faked their identity who you wanted to date based on their fake identity and then you found out they were someone completely different? What a corny, weird, and awful show like all of reality tv.

You came for an interesting game show contest and left with a very real sense of emotion and a new appreciation for yourself and others. Only flaw was adding new contests midway through because they never really had a chance and as a personal preference I wanted it to be longer, I needed more!!

The show tries so very hard to be a newer fresher version of Big Brother, but fails in this pursuit miserably. It's cringe at its peak and just stupid most of the time. The only reason it gets 2 stars is because I love reality t.v. and it passed the time while Big Brother is away. I do believe there is a way to save this show, however. If they made the contestants live in the circle for a month, a lot of my problems would be resolved. I hated how they got video messages from home on day 3 or 4 and got super emotional like they'd been apart for weeks, which coincidentally, is always a very heartwarming part of every season of, you guessed it, Big Brother. Extending the live-in time would create alot of cabin fever and therefore, more drama and more authentic emotion. The premise has promise, but the execution was rushed and it's reliance on our social media obsessed culture won't be enough to sustain it.

    Such an innovative show!

I was unexpectedly drawn to this for the unique modern experiment of a social media game show that displays the drama and irony of humanity. They all did whatever it took to win that huge amount of money, may it be being their true selves or strategically catfishing their way until the end.
