The Comey Rule

Critics Consensus

Despite some impressive performances, The Comey Rule's chaotic approach to current events clarifies very little, further obscuring the facts of already confusing circumstances without adding much insight.

James Comey interviews with President Obama and gets the job of a lifetime, Director of the FBI, an organization he is inspired to transform. But two years into his tenure, the Bureau is plunged into two hugely controversial cases: 'Midyear Exam,' the investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails while serving as Secretary of State, and 'Crossfire Hurricane,' an investigation into Russia's ongoing attempts to derail the Presidential Election of 2016. Comey's decisions on those two cases will alter both his place in history and history itself.

James Comey awakens on November 9, 2016, now known nationally as "the man who got Donald Trump elected." With that hanging over him, he now must try to find a way to work with the new President. Critic Reviews for The Comey Rule Miniseries

All Critics (39) | Top Critics (18)

The two-part series tells its story without the benefit of perspective. It has none of the artfulness and consideration that can lift a political story above its specifics into something wiser and more rooted in human nature.

Brendan Gleeson skillfully avoids caricature.

Sep 25, 2020 | Rating: 3/4 | Full Review…

At its best, though, The Comey Rule is a horror film, and the monster is Donald Trump (played by Brendan Gleeson with a gruff manliness that's almost but not quite flattering to the whiner in chief).

The chief irritant of the show is the knee-jerk splicing of the dramatic action with cable-news footage...

Ultimately, it all comes back to the same surplus of good faith coloring the depiction of Comey.

With its high production values, strong ensemble cast and swish cinematography 'The Comey Rule' creates the mirage of classy event television. Yet it isn't so much a TV drama as a cleansing ritual.

Mature political drama provides few insights, but still fun.

The history condensed into two episodes adds an emotional impact to the effect upon Comey, the FBI, and, ultimately, all of us.

Gleeson is only on screen for a few scenes and then it's back to the noble Comey in the aftermath of his abrupt sacking, but it's Gleeson's playing that will unsettle you by the end of this riveting drama.

Oct 6, 2020 | Full Review…

Daniels is supremely well-cast, catching Comey's starchy righteousness and tendency to showboat. But the script's attempts to paint Comey as a tragic fallen hero is a hard pill to swallow, especially after Tuesday.

It can feel like a tremendous slog, a damning portrayal of Trump but just how honestly loyal does it stay to the characterisation of James Comey?

There's a feeling that you've entered an uncanny valley when you tune in, like someone accidentally crossed an episode of Billions with a Vox explainer. I couldn't look away.

Audience Reviews for The Comey Rule: Miniseries

  • Oct 14, 2020
Imagine being so incensed with hate and anger when your lies aren't gaining traction, that you decide to make a movie about it ! Also, imagine being so gullible as an audience that you beleive any part of this rotten propaganda.
  • Oct 12, 2020
basically two TV movies of epic proportions. The looking into the Clinton emails and The beginning of Trumps time in office. Gleeson and Daniels give power performances
  • Oct 09, 2020
A real world horror story about a criminal president.
  • Oct 05, 2020
We were on the edge of our seats. Everyone everyone everyone should watch this.
  • Oct 04, 2020
A pointed contrast between of a sociopathic president and his unprincipled lackeys and decent public servants standing up for the rule of law.
  • Oct 02, 2020
Welcome to your new weekly dose of propaganda! Please sit quietly, do not ask questions and believe everything you're told.

It was spot on! I followed this story since it broke. I am saddened with what occurred behind the scenes but frightened with events happening in real time! Hope there's more to come!
  • Oct 02, 2020
It's strange seeing current figures portrayed by actors, but the acting in this was really good. This is an important story from our recent history, and I would absolutely recommend it.
  • Sep 30, 2020
I watched this miniseries with a mix of horror and fascination. Jeff Daniels gave, as always, an excellent performance. The content is given more credit by the reviews of the people the actors portrayed. A must watch prior to the election.

More like The Comey Gruel: lacking tasteful substance as you throw it down the sink!
