The Conners is still quite watchable, if for no reason than the strong talent of Goodman, Metcalf and Gilbert as the acerbic heir to her mother Darlene.

It's not half bad. In fact, it's at least half good. But it is also deeply, deeply conflicted.

It's like I said: fine. It exists perfectly well without all the baggage of waiting for Barr...

It needs to definitely move past its grief and regard, with clarity, the many mistakes of its dysfunctional parent in order to avoid repeating them. It's getting there. But it hasn't arrived quite yet.

It was noble to keep the show going for the unblemished cast and crew, but the resulting show doesn't feel right.
October 30, 2018
While it's specious to frame The Conners as the show most representative of working class America, it's certainly a show about working-class America, and a well-made one.

Although the premiere of The Conners stops just when it was getting rhetorically warmed up, it feels like a decent start.

The Conners didn't give [Roseanne's] character and show the Viking funeral she wanted. It gave them the funeral they deserved: gritty, sad, and true to the times.
October 22, 2018
As good as the first episode was, it tells us nothing about what The Conners will be even a few weeks down the road.

The Conners was refreshingly non-toxic.. It was Roseanne without any of the bad parts... It was good.
October 18, 2018
What The Conners felt like was what I'd hoped Roseanne would be all along: a brave, candid, comic look at working-class America and the troubles those who live within it face.
October 18, 2018
The Conners is a solid piece of storytelling, but it's not a panacea.
October 18, 2018
By and large, the pilot episode had the feel of a throwback family sitcom, and it kept the salty edge to the interpersonal dynamics that always set Roseanne apart.
October 17, 2018
Time will tell, but the first episode of The Conners shows that it's worth keeping an eye on.
October 17, 2018
All in all, this was a solid premiere, and they hit things out of the park. The heart of the series is still beating despite Roseanne being gone.

Overt politics becomes secondary to character.
October 17, 2018
The writers... -- have done an absolutely masterful job of tackling a post-Barr world, confronting sadness, cynicism and hopefulness in just the right amount of proportions.
October 17, 2018
The cast... remains strong.
