Critic Reviews for The Day Today Miniseries

All Critics (9) | Top Critics (5)

It's very cynical, very clever and very funny.

Prior to the concept of "satirical news program" picking up steam in America, The Day Today served as a six-episode master class on how a show could create an effective template for parodying, well, just about everything going on in the news.

On The Hour doesn't make fun of real news stories and the slants and gaps in coverage like The Daily Show and its ilk. It pulls back the skin to reveal the skeleton of the news cycle. The form is the content.

It is the degree of detail in The Day Today that makes it special: not a single frame goes by that is not biting at some aspect of television news.

The show's masterstroke was the exquisitely observed attention to technical form: beautifully studied recreations of badly-transferred CNN reports; grotequely self-important theme tunes that carry on a beat too long and excessive graphical intrusions.

The scale of their media lampoonery is breathtaking, taking in everything from music TV stations to real-life emergency shows, the satire raining like arrows with relentless acuity, acid-tipped with surrealism.

Not half as controversial or biting as its successor and some of the segments don't quite hit the spot but The Day Today remains a beacon of ludicrousness in an otherwise stagnant genre of satire.

Apr 19, 2019 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

The Day Today, a relentless, terrifically biting satire, was six episodes of headlines, financial reports, documentary-style films and talking heads sending up current affairs programmes to the point of complete ridicule.
