Critic Reviews for The Detour Season 1

All Critics (27) | Top Critics (12)

The Detour is ruthlessly adult stuff - surely too frank and out-there for some viewers - but it's intrinsically honest, convulsively hilarious and oddly endearing.

This crazily quilted and frequently laugh-out-loud comedy has already done pretty well for itself.

An attempt to deliver the birds-and-the-bees speech veers into a graphic argument about gratification. Somehow the action manages to incorporate Judge Reinhold and not a representative from child services.

Apr 11, 2016 | Rating: 3/4 | Full Review…

At its worst, The Detour can come across as trying too hard to be edgy and caustic. At its best, it has its moments being funny and unexpected.

Jul 9, 2019 | Rating: 2.5/4 | Full Review…

Smart, funny, and grounded enough to not lose the audience when the story floats toward the absurd, The Detour is TBS' strongest original scripted comedy to date.

Jul 9, 2019 | Full Review…

Detour is like National Lampoon's Vacation crossed with something akin to Kimmy Schmidt starring Adam Sandler. It's an intelligent take on a high-concept featuring lowbrow humor.

Jul 9, 2019 | Full Review…

The Parkers are definitely not lowlifes, but The Detour does relish in its own muck. Still, regardless of whether it's your style of comedy or not, the show ultimately is not something that feels particularly fresh or essential.

Mar 22, 2017 | Rating: 2/5 | Full Review…

The Detour doesn't provide a rose-colored view of family but instead one that is equally honest and funny.

Jul 9, 2019 | Full Review…

The Detour is pretty consistently funny but the humor tends to be filled with sexual innuendo that some viewers will find offensive. For others, it will be just fine.

Apr 11, 2016 | Full Review…

This is obviously not a high road The Detour is traveling. But those with a taste for cheerful vulgarity might find it very funny... if the actual goal here is belly laughter, so far so grody.

    Chaos, der Spaß macht.

    Wildly inappropriate, but hilarious.

Sometimes you just need to have a little fun. For 30 minutes just relax and laugh. The casting is perfect, characters are likeable and man can this show be funny! Sure it's crude and raunchy at times but like I said, relax and just enjoy. Natalie Zea is great in it! Funny and gorgeous. Can't wait for season 2

Detour is basically a National Lampoon's Vacation cross country road trip, extended into a hilarious knee slapping comedy series! It has a great cast of characters and is filled with head spinning twists that will keep you captivated and endlessly laughing. But maybe wait till your kids are a little older before watching it.

I ended up watching @Detour on a @Delta Flight, I remember seeing commercials for it, but the air time must have sucked, because I never got to see it when it was on TV. I loved the Syracuse, NY references, because that is where I'm from. @TBS I can't believe this isn't the number one comedy on TV. This is the first show in a very long time to get me to laugh out loud. I don't laugh too often, but this show had me in tears during some parts. I'm so glad that there will be a second season for Detour.

I love this show. So clever and extremely entertaining every second! I wish there were more episodes in season 1 and 1 hour long. Can't wait to see more...!

Oh, I love this show! The trashy characters that deserve to burn in hell, failed parenthood... Yeah, life may punch you many times, but in the end you just stand up and go on

great cast great writing and an all around excellent comedy

Showed so much potential in the first 4 episodes, with being laugh out loud, fall on the floor funny, among everything else that was excellent. But then it just drops down to being alright. And one of the main drives of the show was revealed in episode 8 as something stupid, but it got a short chuckle. The last episode had a great cliffhanger! Knowing it was renewed for Season 2 before it even premiered, not only made watching it more enjoyable, but made a cliffhanger not be so bad...especially when it's this great. Maybe season 2 will focus more on being funny, especially when they will (hopefully) just be on the road trip. This is a stand out from couple made comedies! (Tammy and The Boss are perfect examples of the low end, awful ones)

Somehow TBS gets away with putting this on prime time but I even have my mom hooked on the comedy, but then again she loves Ted!
