It's a high-brow show about low-brow art-porn!-with impeccable production value, wild performances, and enough salaciousness to keep you titillated.

The show subtly follows the twists and turns in a culture of sexuality that is often oversimplified. I'm excited about the possibilities in the rest of the season.

It's about porn in the 70s the same way "Mad Men" was about men who slice off their own nipples, which is to say: sure, porn is involved, but only barely.

Formally as well as cinematically, The Deuce is unporn. It doesn't care about the plot. The money shot is beside the point. And that, really, is what makes The Deuce special.

Good intentions, a big budget, fabulous actors: David Simon's new drama, The Deuce, comes with all of these things, yet it remains strangely uninvolving.
October 3, 2017
[The Deuce] leaves you feeling unsettled by the thought that, almost 50 years later, the casual misogyny so beadily observed here has now found official expression in the America of Donald Trump.

[The Deuce] sucks you irresistibly into a fully-realised world.

It is certainly worth sticking with, if only for the subject matter.

The Deuce is the most potent and provocative drama of the year.

As you might expect from David Simon and George Pelecanos - the team behind premium television's crown jewel The Wire - The Deuce shines with its intricate, intimate and considerate look at the work force and their lives.

The Deuce is [David] Simon's gutter TV series, and what a pleasure it is to bathe in this human cesspool.

It can seem bewildering, like stepping off the Greyhound bus into another world yourself. A brilliant one, though, real and alive, that will swallow you up.

Choosing to watch The Deuce is like deliberately choosing a failed democratic state as the location for your next holiday. It's not going to be fun, in the traditional sense, but you can be pretty sure it'll give you some great stories.

The pimps are a dangerously likeable lot, their shameless sweet-talk the equivalent of a poison apple.

Ultimately ... this is story that does just tick over rather than thump with life.
September 19, 2017
It is a coolly mesmeric depiction of the dynamics of power, delusion and exploitation.
September 19, 2017
Simon gets the details right - no surprise there - devoting nearly equal screen time to his sex workers, pimps, mobsters and police. The result is a story so seedy and gritty that you may feel like a shower after watching.

The Deuce is certainly a feminist series-and half its directors are female-but its smartest move is to resist turning sex into a thesis, exploiting the contradictions instead.
September 18, 2017
... the pilot ends where it needs to, in a moment that provides a bracing slap in the face regarding everything we've seen to that point, and provides context to everything that will follow through the rest of this terrific debut season.
September 14, 2017
For your money and their effort, the show promises a sensual yet sufficiently gritty, occasionally violent and nostalgically illicit act of time travel...
