For a show about geopolitical catastrophe, The Diplomat is surprisingly fun; it’s snappily structured to careen its way through kidnappings and catastrophic photo ops and refrigerator raids with bizarrely high stakes. Go to Full Review

The verbal jousting between Kate and Hal, over global politics and their relationship, is superbly written, Sorkin-style. It’s almost more of a draw than the story itself... Go to Full Review

The Diplomat may contain its share of dramatic liberties for entertainment purposes, but the first season features no shortage of thrills, drama, and diplomacy. Go to Full Review

Ron C @Ronnie692 1d I only watched the first year. Completely stupid. I realize that dramatic license is at play, but this was beyond the pale. Don't waste your time. See more Caley M 6d This show is mostly typical 0/5 left wing propaganda Netflix trash. It has no sensible aspects of diplomacy at all. The main character is a unbearable narcissist that does not belong in a more important position than serving fries. However, this show has one unique tool in its bag: her impish husband making her mad at every turn. That alone makes it decently entertaining. See more Tom K. @tomhkane Feb 6 Couldn’t make it past episode 5. I worked in international relations a long time ago so I enjoyed the fairly realistic scenario laid out as the premise, but the characters and behavior are completely unbelievable to the point of nonsense, even in today’s unique and almost nonsensical environment. The early “jump the shark” moment for me was the not-yet-approved American Ambassador (also being considered, inexplicably, as a serious Vice President replacement) wrestling with her estranged husband in the grass in full view at their country estate while the President and Prime Minister are discussing an global crisis over lunch inside. She has more happen in her first 3 days than most foreign service officers experience in a lifetime. I understand it’s entertainment so entertaining things have to happen, but not to the point that very little makes sense, unless this is supposed to be a comedy. Kerry Russell has been praised for her portrayal in the title role, but she comes off as so frequently frazzled and frustrated by her husband and events going on around her that she loses credibility as someone who would be considered a serious leader. I really wanted to like this series because of my interest in international affairs and political intrigue, but the dumbness of the characters and ridiculous behaviors was too much to sit through. If I’m laid up in bed someday and run out of other things to watch, maybe I’ll come back to catch up on the whacky shenanigans Hal Wyler is pulling to simultaneously drive Kate crazy and launch her into the Oval Office. See more Thomas S Jan 9 Awesome show and great fresh premise. A wonderful espionage thriller in disguise. See more Jeremiah W. @jmoney1017 Jan 4 Season 1 is boring as hell See more Cris R @Crisrad90 Nov 24 I work in this environment and love this highly unrealistic show. The writer is typical for our current dark age - it’s problematic when White House wants a VP a breath away from a frail president because she doesn’t have to campaign meaning earn the trust and votes of the American people. As ambassador of a 800 person embassy she runs around with her chief of station essentially plotting to overthrow the PM of her host country without ever getting recalled, no, loved, by the very victim of her proof-free suspicion. Nobody is empowered to do anything- heck the DCM who would be running the embassy during such a crisis as imagined by the ambo, is right there alongside her. It’s okay, she solves the UK’s problems and thankfully keeps those good guys the Iranians and Russians out of trouble too. Again the suspension of disbelief is hard to maintain if you’ve worked in this environment. Nevermind highly sensitive conversations had in what must be the flimsiest CAA ever, a station chief with an office that has a window and secret conversations had in the open, public or regular historic buildings. However, despite a moral crusader who lobs F bombs cuz that makes her a strong female and plots to be the VP circumventing the process, plots coups abroad, she’s somehow unquestionably the good person here - telling of post 2020 morals or the left or center.
