Tv Season Info
The Durrells is machine-tooled family-friendly escapism just when we need it most.
You wouldn't find subplots as bad as Margo's soap sculpture and Larry's broken leg in, say, Corrie. But it's difficult to get angry with this show; to hate it would be like hating a yellow Labrador.
Every shot is a delight, a warm bath of olive oil you just want to sink into.
This is not a period piece, though the sense of year and place are immense: the ironies, heartbreaks, embarrassments and emotional spayings are urgently recognisable today to anyone who's ever been part of a family.
