Critic Reviews for The Eddy Season 1

Don't miss this series, with its first-rate performances and impeccable filmmaking. It is rich and rewarding, even if it runs into the occasional plotting issue.

The good outweighs the bad enough to recommend it, even if I wish the true peaks of this series were a part of a better show from beginning to end.

But the story line imposed onto the setting is awfully stale, as familiar as the ambience is not.

More than "La La Land," which talked about a love for jazz, "The Eddy" at its best feels like jazz, harking back to Chazelle's first film, the swooning "Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench."

Holland's internalized ability to communicate makes his climactic confrontations all the more powerful, but it also perfectly suits "The Eddy's" less-is-more approach to storytelling.

The trouble with The Eddy is it keeps confusing its received ideas of what's dramatic with what's actually interesting.

The Eddy is a commitment, and I have a friend who couldn't stick with it. But it made my quarantine hours tick by faster.

May 29, 2020 | Full Review…

The Eddy is a hang-out series, with the viewer eager to know more about the various characters as they struggle to make a living and fend off gangsters in a Parisian backstreet jazz club.

May 26, 2020 | Full Review…

The Eddy's success rests with the character of Elliot and with Holland's performance in what at first seems a thankless role.

May 22, 2020 | Full Review…

The show is much akin to Chazelle's breakthrough film, "Whiplash," in which the conflicts are not just set to a seductive jazz score, they ARE jazz: dreamy, fluid and capable of changing directions at the drop of a note.

May 9, 2020 | Rating: B- | Full Review…

I don't know, maybe it's a jazz thing and it's better if you watch it performed live. That's not really an option for The Eddy - but at least you get to see some gifted people giving it their best shot.

May 8, 2020 | Full Review…

The Eddy is about jazz, but doesn't allow for any of the spontaneous, free-wheeling improvisation that defines that genre...

This is one of the best TV series I have ever seen. Acting was great, music was great, cinematography was great (loved those facial closeups!). Have recommended it to all my music-loving friends and relatives. Tip: hook your TV up to a HiFi sound system to really appreciate the music.

First, if you like Jazz from the 50s/60s, you will love this. Has a good story line and some nice storytelling of relationships. A feel good series. Music is great.

It's set in Paris. Impressive. That'll be enough of a draw for some die-hard viewers, but I suggest they do this: take the show, and all its mediocrity, and set it in La La Land, home of director Damien Chazelle's other uncompelling Jazz tale. Now, see what I mean. Retread characters and storyline, of a struggling Paris-based Jazz club, and its earnest, hard-luck owner, surrounded by characters who simply aren't worth your investment. Ho hum. Or rather, ho hum to an okay Jazz track. I've seen Andre Holland do better work than he does here. He bores me here. However, to his credit, he's given very little, script-wise, to work with. I commend myself for somehow getting through this uninspired series (I guess I too was hungry for another fond taste of the City of Lights I had such a fine time visiting), but I gotta ask myself why. Why did I possibly consider it worth the effort.

The Eddy is not a show for every palate. It has not the rhythm of an American show. And it is the best that can happen to a show that it is ambitiously European, both with its direction, photography and performances (the cast is as diverse as it gets). There is no romanticism in how the life of musicians and no embellishments in the storylines. It is not a perfect show, but it's powerful and unsettling, poetic and cacophonic at times, it's made of ups and down, a tempo that can be as unpredictable as jazz.

I enjoyed it! The music was great....and the acting.

Loved it !!! Very different from other Tv series.. Very raw, which I love it. Makes you feel it is real. Great acting and the sound track ! Spectacular Ok, I am a big fan of jazz, but the music is excellent. I enjoyed it so very much.. Vraiment à voir. Absolument génial.

Intimate, in-your-face and such awesome music, acting and scenery. I'm so sorry that it's over - I knew I would miss it after episode 2, and I miss it a lot since finishing all episodes. This could easily have had more seasons produced - hope they'll continue. The characters, each and every one of them, are so interesting and captivating and colorful - I felt like I was living with them the whole time. Highly recommend!

Damien Chazelle has started failing upwards. First with First Man which was a dud and now the The Eddy which feels like high school production.
  • May 11, 2020
Pretentious, boring, rehearsal-style wanna be Jazz set on top of poorly written script and badly matched mumbling characters. At best a high-school hipster production. Not everything that's "different" is actually good.

The music is what draws you in. The slower pace and artistry along with the interweaving of languages forces the audience to pay attention to detail. Watching feels like participating as opposed to the usual news-based recap. Encore!!!
