The best and brightest of the new sitcoms, and an ensemble in the grand tradition of classic TV, thanks to a cast well-schooled in comedy.

There's a new nice lesbian in daytime talk (and given Rosie's courtroom showing this fall, not a moment too soon). DeGeneres' dry humor and affable-but-not-obsequious style are perfect for her morning chat slot, as is her naturally chummy casualness.

By the first week's end, she settled into a comfort zone that showed off her comic talent. Much like her, the show has a pleasant, cheery feel.

Ellen's humor and engaging personality also makes the show feel relaxed and informal, even if some of the issues she and her guests are discussing have the potential of being controversial.
