Robyn McCall, an enigmatic woman with a mysterious background, uses her extensive skills to help those with nowhere else to turn; McCall comes across to most as an average single mom who is quietly raising her teenage daughter; but to a trusted few, she is "The Equalizer" -- an anonymous guardian angel and defender of the downtrodden, who's also dogged in her pursuit of personal redemption.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Queen Latifah returns to the small screen in full command of her craft - if only The Equalizer's overly- engineered early episodes were on her level.

I told you - script-wise, things are woeful. But the rest is great fun. It is another derivative but satisfying franchise that knows exactly what it is doing. Comfort watching in troubled times. Go to Full Review

I like the show best when it abandons righteousness and goes for camp, as when McCall pretends to be a chauffeur in order to duplicate her passenger's cell phone. Go to Full Review

Not that believable or even that compelling, but at least CBS is trying something different. Go to Full Review

Like the CBS network's other reboots of old series (Hawaii Five-0, Magnum PI and others) it's by-the-numbers genre stuff with, so far, no flavour of its own. Go to Full Review
James Croot The Post NZ 04/20/2021
A police procedural (even though our hero is often working against the authorities) that's constantly on the move, shifts seamlessly between darker and lighter moments and never really taxes the audience. Go to Full Review

Chris T @RT85906111 Jan 21 I gave it 2 episodes due to liking Q L. However, like CSI and others, it relies to heavily on the 'nerd' who can hack anything and trace everything! It makes for a very easy story as the writers don't have to struggle to link everything together. If you like 'bubblegum' tv this will satisfy. See more Max W @MaxthorWoo Jul 20 While the gender-flipped premise of The Equalizer may not be entirely convincing, Queen Latifah's relatable presence and the show's thoughtful engagement with modern justice give it a spirit that feels true to the original. See more Lloyd S @Lloyd93 May 14 It was fine, but I conflicted if I should co tinue or not. It doesn't look realistic, they worked too much with their fantasies. See more Celines B @RT41497592 03/06/2025 I love the Queen as the EQUALIZER and her two sidekicks! Also I feel like it brings awareness to every real life situations. See more MyLisa F @RT87282566 02/23/2025 The Equalizer is fun cleanish show you can watch with your teen for movie night. I love the heartfelt storylines. See more Steve H @RT82865275 01/07/2025 I wanted to like this show, but the scripts were often on the level of a Saturday morning cartoon. I didn't get past the first few episodes, so I'll never know if it got better... See more Read all reviews
