Critics Consensus

Grounded by layered performances and a foreboding pace, The Eternaut is a post-apocalyptic adventure that derives its thrills from character as much as it does set pieces.

Chilling for any viewer, these scenes have a special resonance in Argentina, where the story originated as a comic book serial almost 70 years ago. Go to Full Review

Yet despite adhering to well-known formulas, The Eternaut isn’t just another derivative end-of-the-world yarn, but an adaptation of the graphic novel series considered to be a sort of urtext for the genre. Go to Full Review

[Stagnaro] has taken a story about a small band of people with a few simple personality quirks each and added layer upon layer of melodramatic detail and mystery. Go to Full Review

There are a few flaws in The Eternaut: the first three episodes are too slow a burn, while the female characters don’t have much to do. But this is a compelling survival drama that becomes more complex in its second half. Go to Full Review

Gareth V @geewah Feb 26 This a thoughtful, atmospheric sci-fi survival drama that prioritizes mood and character over action. There are some pacing isssues which are frustrating but overall this is building towards something bigger. See more Chris T @RT85906111 Feb 25 Loved it. Good storyline, excellent characters and VERY good actors. Watch it! See more Miguel F @RT99796476 Nov 1 It's a great series, high quality with outstanding performances, and it was fortunate enough to compete with The Last of Us when the latter began to lose viewers after Pedro Pascal's departure. El Eternauta then grew even more and became number one worldwide. It's undoubtedly a Netflix-style series, and it also feels like an HBO production due to its quality of direction and cinematography. The effects were satisfactory, although the CGI insects left some doubt. See more Donnie D @DonnieDarko55 Sep 27 Amazing cinematography, story and character! See more Richard P @RT95211989 Aug 31 The characters are pretty well developed. The script is kind of humorous. It sounds like something that was maybe written by a high school student. It's best to just forget about the technical aspects in terms of explaining what happened. Like with all this poison stuff falling over the place, how could it be possible that they could be running around in the environment with the stuff falling on them and then go back into a hiding place See more Vixo S @vixo_six Aug 23 I really enjoyed this first season and I’m already eager for the second. The Eternaut is clearly more ambitious than its budget, but its smart use of resources makes it solid and effective. As an adaptation of the 1950s comic, I think it works very well, taking time to build its characters and updating the story with a more scientific tone. I especially liked the choice of casting Ricardo Darín as an older protagonist. Making him a Falklands War veteran gives the character a stronger and more believable background in a modern setting. There’s still room for improvement, especially in the CGI, which can look rough at times, but it never ruined the experience for me. Overall, I highly recommend it. With only six episodes, it’s easy to binge, and it may even inspire you to read the original comic, a landmark of Argentine and Latin American sci-fi. See more Read all reviews
