Critic Reviews for The Expanse Season 4

All Critics (33) | Top Critics (3)

"The Expanse" takes it as an opportunity to reinvent itself as needed and preserve what's worked all along. It's a show that spends plenty of time dissecting the complications with changes in the very nature of gravity.

Another Season of the Expanse, another review of pretty much nothing but praise. Who knew well-regarded sci-fi books + great cast + high budget = great television?

The Expanse is an ambitious, thought-provoking series that tells a stirring story with sometimes stunning cinematography.

The CGI may be sharper and the look of the show may be more cinematic, but the show feels essentially the same at the core. We get some new sets, but the heart of the show -- politics in space -- remains intact.

The Expanse looks better than ever. Production values feel bumped up, the direction is more artistic and, most importantly, the illusion of the brand new planet of New Terra is utterly believable.

The biggest differences as The Expanse transitions from Syfy to Amazon is that episode lengths vary a bit (all an hour-ish or less) and the characters get to swear a lot more. But other than that, it's the same show. Thanks, Jeff Bezos!

'The Expanse' has returned in good shape, as if it never left at all. [Full Review in Spanish]

Dec 27, 2019 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

The Expanse is a must-see sci-fi drama. It has found a suitable home with Prime, one that seems very happy to give this phenomenal story the love it deserves.

Dec 23, 2019 | Rating: 9/10 | Full Review…

Evocative and mysterious, "New Terra" is a wonderful re-introduction to The Expanse's slow-burn storytelling, and proof that a new home hasn't fundamentally changed television's best science fiction series.

[S]mart and immersive as ever.

In an age of peak television when everyone keeps asking what the true successor to Game of Thrones is, The Expanse has managed to become precisely that, though with far less fanfare than its fantasy-based counterpart at HBO.

Audience Reviews for The Expanse: Season 4

Dull. After truly enjoying the first 3 seasons and looking forward to learn what was next, the forth season was very focused on side plots, personal intrigues and the untiring petty conflict between factions. Focus on the Drama between characters. The thrill of something new happening is gone.

I just binged the first four seasons of this show, and I recommend it—extra points for having a diverse and interesting cast, including Asian actors. The only thing that I don't really like is the melodrama with Chrisjen Avasarala's character. I end up fast-forwarding through those bits.

The writing suddenly becomes predicable and derived. Too many one demential characters, like a private security leader who literally shoots first and forgets to ask questions later. First 3 seasons showed us what Sci-Fi could be, 4th season shows us why the over commercialization of geek cultural has failed us time and time again.

Still the best scifi available. Thank you Amazon for saving this gem.

Not as good as s1-3, this season needed some Anderson Dawes, all of the social conflict between belters and inners just wasn't there on an emotional level, it loses the continuity from previous seasons, it is still a solid stand alone season with great shots

Great story, thrilling, extraordinary. Looking forward to see more.
  • Sep 24, 2020
Doesn't happen often, but just could not get past a few episodes. The sets are incredible, the creativity about a future in space is innovative and exciting. Just fell short beyond that.
  • Sep 23, 2020
Such a disappointment - despite all the positive reviews. The pace and surprises have slowed right down. They used to "show" - now there are long interludes of "tell". Monosyllabic characters suddenly are emotionally intelligent and there are deep heartfelt 121 conversations. It's becoming a soap opera that happens to be in space. What was utterly compelling - on steroids - has lost its balls. Suddenly we get the life stories of peripheral characters. It's like someone who just doesn't get that science fiction is about ideas is in charge - and feels the need to develop more characters. In science fiction the main hero should always be ideas - not character.

Not as good as the 1st 3 seasons

The truce blew me away. The election results were surprising. The season finale cliffhanger was unexpected!!!
