Critic Reviews for The Expanse Season 4

"The Expanse" takes it as an opportunity to reinvent itself as needed and preserve what's worked all along. It's a show that spends plenty of time dissecting the complications with changes in the very nature of gravity.

Another Season of the Expanse, another review of pretty much nothing but praise. Who knew well-regarded sci-fi books + great cast + high budget = great television?

Jun 1, 2020 | Rating: 5/5 | Full Review…

The Expanse is an ambitious, thought-provoking series that tells a stirring story with sometimes stunning cinematography.

Apr 25, 2020 | Full Review…

The CGI may be sharper and the look of the show may be more cinematic, but the show feels essentially the same at the core. We get some new sets, but the heart of the show -- politics in space -- remains intact.

Dec 30, 2019 | Full Review…

The Expanse looks better than ever. Production values feel bumped up, the direction is more artistic and, most importantly, the illusion of the brand new planet of New Terra is utterly believable.

Dec 30, 2019 | Full Review…

The biggest differences as The Expanse transitions from Syfy to Amazon is that episode lengths vary a bit (all an hour-ish or less) and the characters get to swear a lot more. But other than that, it's the same show. Thanks, Jeff Bezos!

Dec 27, 2019 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

The Expanse is a must-see sci-fi drama. It has found a suitable home with Prime, one that seems very happy to give this phenomenal story the love it deserves.

Dec 23, 2019 | Rating: 9/10 | Full Review…

Evocative and mysterious, "New Terra" is a wonderful re-introduction to The Expanse's slow-burn storytelling, and proof that a new home hasn't fundamentally changed television's best science fiction series.

[S]mart and immersive as ever.

Dec 18, 2019 | Full Review…

In an age of peak television when everyone keeps asking what the true successor to Game of Thrones is, The Expanse has managed to become precisely that, though with far less fanfare than its fantasy-based counterpart at HBO.

The Expanse Season 4 is a revival done right, and one that will keep you enthralled as you try to speculate where things are going.

Another fantastic season of this fantastic show

Quite a let down after the first three seasons. This season seems to throw out the concept and create a wild west kind of plot does not feel well though out. The complex and intricate relations from the past seasons are simplified to a bare good vs bad struggle.

    Best space opera around

Another great season for one of the best Sci-Fi TV series in a long time

Well, in the sea of remakes, crap story telling, woke agenda ... we stumble upon this: - a relatively ok story telling - that tries to tell a story of "not so well fitted truckers in space" - that need to make crap choices of "lesser of two evils" - in the world which is very rough without pure good and evil just shades of grey - that happens to be relatively physics accurate (no "phase modulation of crystal array" of star trek) - that is possibly on brink of end of mankind, while (as usual) greedy power players try to make a buck on enemy (alien) at the gates (this really is familiar to me) To some, it may even sound close to "Firefly" and surely it does bare some rebalance, but I think that Expanse is more polished and it provides a background to characters so we understand them rather than relying on exposition, it is definitely longer because of that, but it makes it more interesting and you can lose you self in this universe. A serious thanks to writers for creating this story ! It was a long time since we had something good - which makes this fantastic in current climate ! This goes for all season that I've seen so far (1-5).

To end Season 3 with such a plethora of possibilities and then focus Season 4 so closely on just one feels like a noticeable step backwards in terms of storytelling. Still the characters and their respective developments kept me watching even through the limited scope of the season. There's plenty of evidence to believe that this series will land when it comes to an end two seasons from now, but once it does I'm willing to bet that Season 4 won't be remembered as its high point.

Personally, I see season 4 as the weakest season of the whole show. The whole story pacing is decelerated in this outer star system without a good reason. The whole sub conflict between Holden's crew and Murtry doesn't seem authentic or natural. It has a manufactured taste to it like it is only plot armor because they needed to fill a whole season. It doesn't seem to influence the character arcs of Holden's crew either. It has no overall significance to the whole plot except for a minor discussion during the election campaign on Earth. The story around Bobbie Draper gives a good contrast to this lethargic process in the outer system. Unfortunately, her character isn't told in a consistent and authentic way. At least, it doesn't fill its full potential. Bobbie's complete shift in moral has a manufactured taste to it. The story doesn't thoroughly show why her morals should change and change back. It could have been told differently in such a way that Bobbie's suspicion is her main drive to get into the black market crew and not the need for a job or for money - as it is communicated in various scenes. This would have been a more authentic way to lead into the next season as well. These two issues define this season and fortunately solely this season. This is why I can not agree that it reaches any of the other seasons' quality.

Hmmmm. S04 was slow and had a very different vibe about it. still good and there are many possibilities where the story can go now. I believe this series covers one of the slower books so Im really looking forward to s05

New horizons of an old story. The new world. The new technologies. And new challenges and dangers. Also, the story goes on and shows as an new enemy. Very exciting.

Changing up the kind of stories it tells with extreme ease, The Expanse is a show with an unmatched level of quality in its writers room.
