The Firm: Season 1 (2012)

TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: A typical, old-fashioned legal crime show, The Firm grows tedious from the first episode.

Tv Season Info

Based on the John Grisham novel and subsequent Tom Cruise movie, this drama picks up 10 years after the events in the film to examine the new life of the man who brought down the Memphis law firm Bendini, Lambert & Locke. Mitchell McDeere (Josh Lucas), his wife Abby (Molly Parker) and their daughter Claire (Natasha Calis) are out of witness protection and living in Washington, D.C., where Mitch starts up a firm of his own, along with his brother Ray (Callum Keith Rennie) and Ray's girlfriend Tammy (Juliette Lewis). But it's a rough go, so when Mitch is approached to partner with the successful firm Kinross and Clark, he agrees. The deal seems like a solution to his problems, but Kinross and Clark may have ulterior motives.

Critic Reviews for The Firm Season 1

All Critics (23) | Top Critics (12)

"The Firm" is not so much a two-hour pilot as a prison sentence. It's tedium, all gummed up by implausible plot twists, diabolically dopey dialogue, and other assorted bits of hooey.

The action moves at an admirable clip and the cases feel interesting enough so we want to see how they come out.

The cast is a major factor in drumming up interest in what happens next.

The most glaring of The Firm's many problems is that it seems to have no idea what it wants to be-a taut mystery or a sentimental legal procedural.

While it wasn't completely captivating, it did grab my attention.

When a brand-new show already feels like a repeat, you know something's wrong.

Jan 8, 2012 | Full Review…

If Mitch and his relationship with his wife and associates were compelling, we might forgive the plot holes and logic lapses that riddled "The Firm."

Jan 8, 2012 | Full Review…

It may be ironic to call a legal thriller created by the man who all but invented the legal thriller derivative, but in this case, it feels very much like the truth.

In the premiere, unfortunately, the case of the week and the background story seem to be competing to see which can be sillier.

Jan 8, 2012 | Full Review…

A show that opens with that kind of casual, incompetent stupidity is telling you how little effort it plans to expend on telling its story, and how little respect it has for your intelligence.
