Tv Season Info

Season 3, the final season of this drama, begins with Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) on death row while former FBI agent Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) is putting his life back together in the wake of his split with Claire. But, when the FBI discovers three bodies in a hotel room with a message reading "Ryan Hardy Lies," he learns that Mark Gray (Sam Underwood) has resurfaced. With followers of his own to help him re-create scenes in which his family members were killed, Mark's mission is to discredit the FBI and get the trial of Arthur Strauss (Gregg Henry), Joe Carroll's mentor, thrown out. A former pupil of Strauss also enters the picture, making the situation even more dire. As a result, Ryan must seek help from an unlikely source. Shawn Ashmore and Jessica Stroup return while Zuleikha Robinson and Michael Ealy join the cast.

Critic Reviews for The Following Season 3

It has everything we loved about the first two seasons and more. Blood! Pain and heartache! Kevin Bacon on the dance floor!

At this point, your own personal investment in Ryan as a character is (probably) what's going to have to carry you through this season. The wheel has not been reinvented here.

This show may always have its glaring, illogical holes that make me squirm, but what The Following does, at its best, is make it one enjoyable ride.

This was a decent enough premiere. The crime scenes were duly creepy.

There's a nagging sense that "The Following" would have worked best had Hardy played his cat-and-mouse game with Hannibal Lecter-like mastermind Joe Carroll for a single season and been done with it.

The series quickly settles back into its odious pattern: Grisly murders are committed, Hardy broods, and the always outsmarted FBI looks like it'd have trouble handling security at a Tony Bennett concert.

Dear Kevin Bacon, You can stop all this. You can just say you're not going to film any additional episodes of The Following, and I'm pretty sure Fox would have to let the show go. Say you want to spend more time with your family.

Like one of its insanity-prone followers, The Following re-stages the same crimes and re-visits the same story beats in its season 3 premiere, but still manages to entertain thanks to a game cast and the usual shower of guilty pleasure mayhem.

Audience Reviews for The Following: Season 3

½

A reckoning comes for Ryan Hardy and his team in the third and final season of The Following. Seeking revenge for the deaths of his mother and twin brother, serial killer Mark Gray puts together a team to stage a number of murders designed to expose Hardy and Weston as rogue FBI agents and force them to confess to their crimes; but unknown to Mark, he has a mysterious benefactor who's using him for his own means. As usual some of the subplots are a little convoluted, but the writers do a good job at building suspense and delivering shocking cliff hangers. Also, recurring guest stars Ruth Kearney and Michael Ealy give impressive performances, creating compelling new villains. At times it's a bit stale and repetitive, but overall Season 3 of The Following is gritty and intense, and provides some closure to the series.
