Critic Reviews for The Get Down Season 1

The Baz Luhrmann Netflix series about the rise of hip-hop contains great music and set pieces that make it easy to binge-watch and enjoy.

The Get Down wants to be gritty, but it doesn't quite know how. It's like a glistening manicure with the polish laid over flecks of dirt-under a few clear coats, schmutz is indistinguishable from glitter.

It's a masterpiece.

Production problems and creative challenges plagued The Get Down, with Luhrmann admittedly on the verge of giving up at several points. But he powered through and has birthed a grossly uneven but still oft-scintillating mess-terpiece.

[The premiere is] Luhrmann at his most bloated. Once the show moves into subsequent episodes, it maintains Luhrmann's trademark operatic stylizations, but it also factors in our need for a cogent, original narrative.

"The Get Down" boasts plenty of vibrancy. But after three episodes it's still unclear whether this ambitious Netflix series has come up with a narrative that's as galvanic as the art form that inspired it.

There's no recognizable human psychology, but often The Get Down reads like one of the best long-form music video projects since Thriller.

It's incredible. Genuinely. And like nothing you will have ever seen on television before.

Compared to the splendid look of the show, dipping back into those clips from IRL New York City news reports looks and feels cheap.

There is plenty to love about The Get Down, even if you can't get behind every creative choice.

Mar 1, 2019 | Full Review…

The series created by Baz Luhrmann aspires to remain in the memory of the spectator because of its rhythm, its color and its brightness. [Full Review in Spanish]

Production design, sound design, camerawork and performance are all precisely attenuated to create an overwhelming cinematic juggernaut. You don't watch it passively, you hang on for dear life.

Audience Reviews for The Get Down: Season 1

  • Jul 10, 2020
Wouldn't love for Netflix to produce another season show has so much potential...still having withdrawals
  • Sep 24, 2019
Though I am not particularily interested in the music business or the history of music genres, I still enjoyed the show a lot because all the characters and the Get Down Brothers in particular are so likable and interstetimg, you just want to know how their story continues and whether they can make it big... huge pity the show was discontinued after the first season
  • Mar 26, 2018
What The Wire was to the streets, The Get Down was even more for the music.
  • Mar 18, 2018
Utterly loved the show. Great music, singing, acting and a very engaging story. Incredibly well done
  • Sep 26, 2017
It's the best presentation of Hip-Hop history, great story, the best music of all time, for all the lovers of oldschool hip-hop it is a must see !!!
  • Sep 11, 2017
In spite of some incoherence this is a classic, a really good exploration of old school hip hop and New York City and everything that was happening in the late 1970s - as well as human psychology in general
  • Jul 27, 2017
Never have seen anything like this. If you love hip hop - you will love this show!
  • Jun 08, 2017
Friggin LOVE this show. Bad on you Netflix for cancelling it. I got lost in this world of beautiful production, cast, music and the lifestyle. This is why we watch TV. To get lost in the show...Hate reality TV. This was a production worth saving.
  • Jun 03, 2017
Visually stunning, poetic with soft grit and a dash of fairytale flare
  • Jun 01, 2017
Estou feliz que essa série acabou, muito feliz, era horrível.
