The multi-talented Baz Luhrmann and a team of collaborators -- Oscar-winner Catherine Martin, legendary MC Nas, Grandmaster Flash, Pulitzer-winning playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis, and hip-hop historian Nelson George -- have created a music-driven drama that documents the emergence of a new art form. Set in the late 1970s, when New York was at the brink of bankruptcy and disco was dying out, the rise of hip-hop is told through the lives, art, music and dance of a group of young people in the South Bronx.

This is a story centered around poor Black and Latinx communities, their struggles with institutional abandonment, and their journeys to self-love and empowerment. We don't see that and I want more. Go to Full Review

[Baz] Luhrmann zeroes in on the universal elements of humanity while leaning heavily on the knowledge of producers Grandmaster Flash, George and Nas to stitch everything together. Go to Full Review

There's no recognizable human psychology, but often The Get Down reads like one of the best long-form music video projects since Thriller. Go to Full Review

It's incredible. Genuinely. And like nothing you will have ever seen on television before. Go to Full Review

Compared to the splendid look of the show, dipping back into those clips from IRL New York City news reports looks and feels cheap. Go to Full Review

Sinéad W @Sine_86 01/30/2024 Loved it! Moving onto season 2 now. I loved the broadway feel to it, like you're watching a play or a musical. But it hits different because the cast was predominantly of colour. There's more depth to it. Lots of talent, lots of amazing music. It teaches you about the evolution of rap from disco. How people of colour took disco music and poetry, and created a whole new genre. It also shows the struggles for people of colour in New York at that time. Not very compelling. See more Devodene V @Zeni_D 07/10/2020 Wouldn't love for Netflix to produce another season show has so much potential...still having withdrawals See more 09/24/2019 Though I am not particularily interested in the music business or the history of music genres, I still enjoyed the show a lot because all the characters and the Get Down Brothers in particular are so likable and interstetimg, you just want to know how their story continues and whether they can make it big... huge pity the show was discontinued after the first season See more 03/26/2018 What The Wire was to the streets, The Get Down was even more for the music.
