Critic Reviews for The Get Down Season 1

All Critics (74) | Top Critics (31)

The Baz Luhrmann Netflix series about the rise of hip-hop contains great music and set pieces that make it easy to binge-watch and enjoy.

If you can dig the vibe, the feature-length first episode becomes as absorbing as it is theatrical.

The Get Down wants to be gritty, but it doesn't quite know how. It's like a glistening manicure with the polish laid over flecks of dirt-under a few clear coats, schmutz is indistinguishable from glitter.

It's a masterpiece.

Production problems and creative challenges plagued The Get Down, with Luhrmann admittedly on the verge of giving up at several points. But he powered through and has birthed a grossly uneven but still oft-scintillating mess-terpiece.

[The premiere is] Luhrmann at his most bloated. Once the show moves into subsequent episodes, it maintains Luhrmann's trademark operatic stylizations, but it also factors in our need for a cogent, original narrative.

The series created by Baz Luhrmann aspires to remain in the memory of the spectator because of its rhythm, its color and its brightness. [Full Review in Spanish]

Production design, sound design, camerawork and performance are all precisely attenuated to create an overwhelming cinematic juggernaut. You don't watch it passively, you hang on for dear life.

More ambitiously, the show endeavors to show not just a new artwork but a new art coming into being.

Mar 7, 2018 | Full Review…

It's full of strange and inexplicable decisions, like the baffling choice to frame the whole series as a story being told by the main character via rap ballad performed in concert in the mid-'90s. It's also one of the coolest things I've seen all year.

Audience Reviews for The Get Down: Season 1

The Get Down can get much like a soap opera and over the top very easily, and its musical numbers are rather on and off, but its powerful depiction of the political and social enviroment of the 1970s in New York City and whimsical presentation of its colorful cast is what will keep you entertained all throughout.
