At its heart are two terrific performances by Hoult and Fanning.

A hilarious period piece that tells a different story than the history books do of Catherine The Great. Nicholas Hoult & Elle Fanning are both phenomenal in these roles.

Catherine is on the side of justice, to be sure, but she's fallible too, and the series gets plenty of laughs out of her predicament.

The Great, a fanciful, visually splendid and viciously dark new comedy about Catherine the Great, is a blast.

British Asian actor Sacha Dhawan shines as Orlo, a career bureaucrat in Peter's inner circle.

Historically bonkers, but so witty it will make your brain melt.

McNamara -- along with Fanning and Hoult, whose fine-tuned performances turn Peter and Catherine's contentious relationship into a complex frenemy-ship -- focuses on how power, and the comfort that comes with it, can corrupt them both.

What saves The Great is a pair of instant classic performances by Fanning and Hoult.

The anachronistic drama is backed by powerful performances and talent that shift from silly to serious to downright vindictive at the drop of the hat.

Hulu's new show wants to portray an ultracompetent female ruler. But it fails to capture the real genius of Catherine the Great.

The changes just make Catherine a very boring character.... That being said, it is a fun show and very watchable. Elle Fanning is a delightful actress, and I've honestly forgotten she is not British.

Elle Fanning delivers a career-best performance as Catherine the Great and Nicholas Hoult is exceptional as always.

The Great offers "occasionally" accurate information amid scads of playful reinventions, sex jokes, and scathing satire. In short, it's one hell of a ride.

The Great weaves between comedy and drama with an assurance that is underpinned by [Elle] Fanning's restrained performance as a young Catherine, who is not yet Great and ruler of all she surveys.

The result has The Favourite's hilarious Mean Girls costume-drama feel, while upping the stakes with enough violence, sex, and intrigue to satisfy Game of Thrones fans.

"The Great," dressed in wondrous rococo designs and cinematography, is fun but keen, looking at figures of power with little respect and instead the mocking smirk of those of us living under their boots.

he Great isn't as biting, dark or nihilistic as The Favourite but it has its own charms. It's a really enjoyable diversion, one elevated by Nicholas Hoult's antics.

Elle Fanning burns brightly in headlining The Great. Her performance is everything a viewer wants from an empress in ascent: confident, sharp, funny and luminous.

Raucously funny...Nicholas Hoult steals the show as the totally reprehensible, astoundingly stupid Peter III.

The Great has an ideal saleswoman for its heady mix of high and low. At just 22, Fanning has a CV that already spans from Mike Mills to Nicolas Winding Refn.
