Season 1
The Halcyon

Critics Consensus

Though perhaps a little uninspired, The Halcyon exercises well-worn period tropes with style, and its solid cast makes for watchable company.

Critic Reviews for The Halcyon Season 1

All Critics (10) | Top Critics (5)

The Halcyon was complete hokum, with reheated plots aplenty (love across the racial/sexual/class divide) and suspension of disbelief compulsory. But with a cast this good, none of it mattered too much.

There are lots of characters, even more plot and everything so far is immensely enjoyable, especially if you finish off any prosecco left over from New Year's Eve as you go.

Early signs... all point to this becoming another little ITV triumph, as long as the focus stays skewed even slightly towards the political than the upstairs/downstairs bedhopping.

Sep 5, 2017 | Full Review…

There was too much going on, and almost none of it for any good reason.

Set in a five-star hotel during the Second World War this is your usual, period nostalgia complete with jazz singers in slinky dresses (see also Close To The Enemy, yawn).

As well getting the classical references right, it also clearly ticks a lot of boxes on the Downton Abbey replacement checklist.

Well the opening episode kicks off with a bang.

There isn't anything original about The Halcyon (apart from the excellent titles and theme music), but in spite of this it works. Perhaps it's the fairy dust.

Basically ,it's a big soap opera with British accents. It's OK.

Oct 21, 2017 | Full Review…

I wish they'd branched out a bit more, gotten out of their upstairs-downstairs wheelhouse and really taken a different approach, and let the hotel be the fascinating character it might have been.
