Critic Consensus: "First Blood" is an intriguing prologue to the world of Gilead, as well as Serena Joy's key role in bringing it forth.

Critic reviews for First Blood
First Blood advances the storyline in a few major ways, and the push and pull between Serena and June makes their interactions the most complexly layered of the show.
The sixth episode of season 2 finally turns the tide on the dour mood (even more than usual) that has overtaken the series for the past few episodes.
The episode title obviously embodies this tragic fact of life in Gilead, but it's rage that takes the forefront. Rage on the part of not only all the female characters on-screen in The Handmaid's Tale, but the writers too.
Season 2 has continued to devastate and surprise Hulu's subscribers, and the most recent episode is certainly no exception.
This week, she pushes Serena too far, but finds a surprising ally once more in Fred. I can't image him trusting her again in the slightest after her disappearing act.
