Based on the best-selling novel by Margaret Atwood, this series is set in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what used to be part of the United States. Gilead is ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state, and is faced with environmental disasters and a plummeting birth rate. In a desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world, the few remaining fertile women are forced into sexual servitude. One of these women, Offred, is determined to survive the terrifying world she lives in, and find the daughter that was taken from her.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Elisabeth Moss is better than ever, but scattershot plotting and an overbearing sense of doom may prove too grim for some viewers to really enjoy The Handmaid's Tale's fourth season.

The plot whips along, lean and hungry as any high-speed intergalactic soap opera. Go to Full Review

This has become as grim as any violent action movie and Moss, who is usually terrific, now only deploys one expression -- horrified disbelief. I can't care any more, don't feel anything any more, and this should be put out of its misery. Go to Full Review

It felt like The Handmaid's Tale threw logic and feasibility to the wind as it went in search of an ending designed to draw us back for more. Go to Full Review

I'm ready for it all to be over,' June signs at one point - and I find myself agreeing with her. Go to Full Review

A fifth series has been commissioned, though it is hard to see how they can possibly dig deeper into the gloom. Maybe everyone will get a puppy and live happily ever after. Go to Full Review

"Handmaid" is many things -- sickening, poetic, flawed, magnificent -- but above all, still relevant. Go to Full Review

Benjamin H @RT54005248 Dec 23 Elizabeth Moss is firing on all cylinders in an otherwise uneven and dreary fourth season that has a habit of meandering through its somewhat emotional and powerful storytelling that still impresses on a visual level. See more A.L.Jude P @judebd Jul 27 No doubt, the story sends shivers down the spine, imagining what might happen if religion delves too deeply into life. It seems the theme is changing rapidly, losing the tension that was present in the previous three seasons. See more Lane M @RT31121284 Jun 3 EXCELLENT SERIES- Gets better and better See more Sam G @RT88876806 May 29 Another great season, not as good at the two first ones, but it's still amazing. The last two episodes are particularly great and the conclusion of the season is just epic. The series should have ended there, it would have been much better than the last two seasons. See more Cassie S @RT36089787 May 29 A return to brilliance after a dull season 3. What an amazing and satisfying final two episodes in particular. The satisfaction in June taking control over her life and getting revenge was a treat, especially with Lawrence and Nick, both also victims of Fred, getting to contribute. June's struggle to fit in with her life in Canada was raw and real. The family reunion between Nick, June, and daughter Nichole was gorgeous and moving, particularly with Nick bringing June information on daughter Hannah without being needed to be asked. The love between them is beautiful and so touching to watch, bringing a light in the darkness to an otherwise bleak show. Some episodes drag, especially episode 8 which felt like a series recap and the realism of the show is out the window, but otherwise this season is very much worth the watch. Max Minghella is a particular bright spot in this season and its a shame he didn't win the Emmy for his touching performance. See more LauraPalmer T @RT55389402 May 24 Fred dying saved the show!
