Season 1
The Hero
Dwayne Johnson heroically tries to inject some gravitas into this slick reality competition, but not even the star's bulky charisma can hide that the series' central conceit is muddled.

Critic Reviews for The Hero Season 1

The Hero turns out to be lots of talk and relatively little action. Too much time is spent either in the "Hero Penthouse" or "The War Room," where the trash talk flows like honey.
Once you get past the fact that the title is an unfortunate delusion, The Hero gives you a pretty decent reality competition show.
After just one episode, the squabbling between the contestants was already getting on my nerves, making it hard to imagine tuning in week after week to see who's going to come up the victor.
Unlikely as it might seem, this Panama-based reality competition series hosted by Dwayne ''The Rock'' Johnson is becoming absorbing viewing.
What makes a hero?... The Hero, starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, taps into these questions, but it so often does so in a manipulative, predictable, boring way that you might not want to stick around for the answers.
The participants (who include a pro wrestler and a cheerleader) are a straight-from-central-casting bunch, and before we've even gotten to know them, they engage in an inordinate amount of bickering.
They usually have no hesitation in admitting they're there for the money. Which, if they ever take it for themselves on this show, somehow makes them less than a hero? Whatever.
Like ABC's late, lamented Glass House, the competitors must play two games -- one against their housemates, another for viewers at home, who will decide a winner. Gentle backstabbing only, please.
The Hero is not all that exciting but the production values are top-notch and the location (Panama) somewhat unique.
The show ultimately succeeds due to its host -- The Rock is as charismatic as ever, and that goes a long way. The Hero certainly isn't the best reality show we've ever seen, but it's entertaining and fun, and probably worth a look.
The Hero's constant focus on money makes it seem more centered on greed than generosity, despite the donations that are being given to charity thanks to its efforts. It also creates an atmosphere where unselfish behaviors are often viewed with suspicion.
The editing, producing, and/or coaching may be to blame, too, because that annoying, constant conflict was pretty much all the premiere focused on.
