The Honorable Woman is comprised of only eight episodes, each tightly written by Hugo Blick. The intricate plot never feels rushed or forced and concludes without ever sacrificing the complexity of its premise for a season-ending cliffhanger.

Intelligent British political spy drama is intense, violent.

The Honourable Woman is dense and complex, but ultimately very satisfying because of how intricately it has interwoven the varied political interests and manipulations with the emotional lives of its characters.

A complex and multi-layered yarn that seems particularly relevant in light of the current state of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Blick's assured treatment of the conflict achieved televisual yoga. For eight episodes it held itself taut, every theme, character and motivation moving slowly and with utter control towards the conclusion.

It's refreshing to encounter an entertainment so unsqueamish about the messiness of reality.

Whatever the series' flaws... it effectively communicates an impressively high order of ambiguity.

The avenues The Honorable Woman pursues are frustrating in the extreme - all the more so for how interesting the raw material is.

This miniseries doesn't show its cards up front, slowly building to a boil. This gives the miniseries a tension-filled, engrossing, slow crescendo effect that mirrors the clandestine events depicted in The Honorable Woman.

The out-of-date plot lines [in Homeland] felt like a failure of imagination. The Honorable Woman avoids these problems by coming at the conflict sideways, depicting not the main political players, but the businessmen who observe and profit from war.

It wants to yield a difficult yarn and it does, but it also wants to make sure you don't fall behind so that when you're guessing, you're puzzled by the things Blick wants you guessing, not by broader things.

This is an impressive piece of work, absorbing provided that you're willing to meet it on its own storytelling terms.

Politically, The Honorable Woman doesn't take sides - it comes at you from all sides. And all sides are given motivations and conflicts, which makes this miniseries both a rare and a rewarding viewing experience.

The Honorable Woman is the kind of fiction that speaks to deeper truths.

In a summer of TV abundance, this demanding and deliberately paced thriller stands apart and above the glut of original programming. With its urgently compelling mysteries and shocking reveals, it's the equal of last summer's brilliant Broadchurch.
July 31, 2014
Though the deliberate pace and cool tone recall classic British spy fiction, Honorable Woman is also very much in the mold of modern paranoid TV thrillers, where twists and reversals are interlaced like patterns in a carpet.

The Honorable Woman is first and foremost an engrossing thriller, with its status as a notable feminist genre deconstruction coming in a distant second.

The self-conscious weightiness overshadows the thrills, leaving the audience as drained and numb as the characters.

Whatever your viewing regimen, Honorable Woman is highly recommended for its distinctive approach, bravura performances, overall digestibility and, yes, degree of difficulty.
