Tv Season Info

The second and final season of "The Hour" picks up one year after the newsmagazine was abruptly pulled off the air for broadcasting a controversial interview with Lord Elms, which resulted in Freddie (Ben Whishaw) being fired. It's now 1957 and Bel (Romola Garai) is reporting to a new eccentric Head of News, Randall Brown (Peter Capaldi), and struggling to keep popular presenter Hector Madden (Dominic West) from bolting to rival ITV, especially when Freddie is re-hired as co-presenter. To keep Hector, she takes on charming ITV producer Bill Kendal (Tom Burke) and becomes captivated by his magnetic personality. But soon Hector is embroiled in a scandal that threatens his marriage and career, and Freddie attempts to break a career-making story about a secret nuclear-testing program that will expose government corruption at the highest levels. Also starring: Oona Chaplin; Hannah Tointon; Anna Chancellor; and Julian Rhind-Tutt.

It's a subtle intertwining of journalists' professional struggles, their personal lives, and the thorny social issues that envelope them, and I can't recommend it enough.

If only the show's producers had more faith in their characters-and in the idea that viewers will be entertained and challenged by watching them struggle to do a good job of holding people out there in the "real world" accountable for their actions.

While Freddie, played wonderfully by Whishaw, remains one of the show's virtues, _The Hour'_s great disappointment is that this new season is still doing so badly by Bel.

The players seem to spend much of their time entering and exiting the same drab offices while shoveling exposition at one other.
